Nobody seemed to be surprised by that (that too in a remote mining township 3 hours from the nearest city). You would surely have seen female doctors when you were working in India. Was Premi surprised at that also? She would get the shock of her life if she finds that the first driver of Bangalore Metro is a woman

In addition to the points you made, the public sector orgs like Railways, SBI, etc. have had women clerks for as far back as I can remember - from the time I was a little kid.

And then, there are the millions of women who work today in IT industry, call centers, BPOs, as receptionists in offices, telemarketing, garment factories, etc.

Today's urban woman making a show of surprise about working women is something that sets my BS meter running full speed.

Either what's being typed here is a lie, or the expression by that woman was misunderstood.
I didn't see any female doctors in the hospital I worked at - but then, it was a small hospital. A majority of the nurses were female though, and a few women helped in operating theatre (but had a subservient role to the two male general surgeons there, who performed the operation itself). All the anaesthetists were also male.
That said, there were a lot of women in employment. That is precisely why I was surprised at the attitude that Premi had.

I'm one of four children. Perhaps Premi was more surprised that rather that my mum worked as long as she did despite having children to raise? She definitely seemed surprised that even when my mum was home, if I wanted something to eat i would have to prepare it myself!

I think India should stop its military deterrence and make 1/6th of humanity live in fear and frustration of being attacked by India's belligerent neighbors or India should be devoid of putting interests of 1/6th of humanity on the world's stage because India as projected by Hollywood and BBC is a poor country.

I expect SSC members to be more rational and understand the importance of soldiers who protect a territory...

plus 70% of women in India are working woman more than US or EU...I read that somewhere..poor woman in urban areas work as maids while poor woman in rural areas work at feilds...

People like you don't have any shame. India's finance minister says that these are peanuts, we say that these are peanuts, and ask you to shove it up your collective arse. And then, you keep coming forward and begging people to accept the so-called NGO-enriching "aid"? People who give "aid" (I do - I donate frequently), don't keep harping on it, and don't whine when the aid-recipient fails to purchase goods from the donor. What sort of crappy "aid" is that?

And let me tell you, since you seem to be as economically challenged as many British netizens - you need to understand that while 80p might be a negligible amount in the UK, Rs. 65 is not as small in India as a simple-minded currency-converting pompous turd would think. A person earning Rs. 65 a day is among the poorest persons in India, but its not the same as living on "80p" in UK. The kind of economically challenged "commentors" that I come across all too frequently these days, need to have this spelt out for them to understand.

This, I completely believe.

Almost all Indian mothers (irrespective of the education level, rich/poor, working or not) would not ask their children to prepare their own food if she is around. That would be sacrilege, a stigma on their motherhood

Or Birmingham. Don't forget Birmingham... The smart Indians came back to Britain on ships when the empire left.

Ah. Our Brummy cousins. The fifth column for when we move to complete our takeover of the UK

Already, Lakshmi Mittal and Anish Kapoor have conspired to erect a red steel monstrosity with the sole purpose of ruining the London olympics. This is just the beginning

My grandma kicked strange men in the nuts as a hobby. Can't get more progressive than that.

You're almost missing the point. I've conceded that women in India do work a lot. That I noticed that attitude was meant as a minor aside - the main point I was trying to make was about dowry deaths. Aside from one poster saying dowries have been outlawed, you've all neglected to mention the fact that there are over 8000 convicted cases each year of men burning their wives to death due to a deficient dowry, the real incidence of the crime is likely to be a helluva lot higher, and rates are only on the rise!
