Launch of four more mobile outlets

Agriculture Minister K P Mohanan will launch four more mobile vegetable outlets of the Kerala State Horticultural Products Development Corporation (Horticorp) in the city on Wednesday.

This will take the total number of Horticorp mobile outlets to eight. Horticorp decided to increase the number owing to the overwhelming response it got for the first four units rolled out in May, managing director Manoj Kurup said.

The new vehicles are larger and better equipped and, like their predecessors, will offer vegetables at 30 per cent reduced prices, he said. The mobile outlets will stop at designated spots throughout the daytime to facilitate a ‘shop at your doorstep’ experience. Preferred locations include residential areas, public places and government offices.

‘’Residents’ associations had requested us to launch more vehicles. Besides, the four units were not being able to handle the long queues,’’ Manoj Kurup said. With the number growing to eight, Horticorp is also planning to revise the schedules of the vehicles, he said. They will be published on Wednesday.

The first vehicles were launched as part of the State Government’s market intervention programme. The vehicles will be flagged off from the Vikas Bhavan premises at 4 pm on Wednesday. Health Minister V S Sivakumar will make the first sale to K Muraleedharan MLA.

Supermarket Chain Nilgiris' 5th store in Trivandrum

Trivandrum: The Chennai based supermarket chain, Nilgiris, is making slow inroads in Kerala and is setting up their stores across the State. The supermarket chain today opened their seventh store in Kerala, its fifth in Thiruvananthapuram. The new supermarket was inaugurated by Adv. K Chandrika, Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram. The other two stores are in Kochi.

Nilgiris is also one of the oldest supermarket chains in India with origins dating back to 1905. Also, unlike almost all other supermarkets and grocery shops in India, Nilgiris sells its own products among other brands from their Nilgiri Dairy Farm, which specialises in dairy, dairy products, bakery and chocolates.

Interacting with Kerala Biz News, Naveen Narayanan, Zonal Head - Kerala & TN, Nilgiris said, “We are enthused by the response in Kerala and the Company will be expanding on a franchisee model here with Kochi and Kottayam being the next cities identified for growth. We are on the look out for enterprising entrepreneurs who can join us on our expansion plans. We need people who can manage and interact with 200 vendors and handle about 8,000 products”.

Prince Vinod, Managing Partner of Bhavan Traders, the franchisee of Nilgiris said, “We started our first Nilgiris Supermarket in Trivandrum about six months back and today we are opening our second store. That should speak for itself the growth of our business and the brand’s strength. This is also the first new generation retail store in this part of the city.”

In 2008, Actis, an UK based private equity investor, invested US$ 65 million in the Nilgiris Group in order to strengthen the group's manufacturing and franchising operations in South India. This investment has given Actis a controlling interest of more than 51% stake in the Nilgiris group.

Another fair is here

Glass bangles, bangle stands, thread ear rings, brass chains, pearl sets and a lot more. A crafts exhibition surely hints at a load of junk jewelry and fine range of sarees and kurthis. But this time there are a few new highlights. Hailing from Odisha, there is a stunning array of tribal jewellery. Painted using flower dyes, these earrings and necklaces are made from a mix of stone powder and clay.

“These are crafted by tribals of Odisha. They pick half-bloomed flowers and make this jewelry at night time because, during day time the tree gum used in this jewelry dries off. It is almost unbreakable, unless you purposefully try to break it,” says S Kumar who hails from Ganjam, Odisha. Brass jewellery from Odisha are also worth the price, for their rustic appeal.

Made of Assam Teak, the wooden massage rollers with spikes are a big hit at this time’s All India Craft and Handloom Bazaar held at VJT Hall. On inquiring whether it would hurt to use the spiky massagers, the artisans from Uttar Pradesh are very enthusiastic to give a free demonstration. The hand massage roller is priced Rs 50 and the feet roller Rs 400. Every state has something to flaunt at their respective stalls. The heavy temple jewelry from Vadacheri, Tamil Nadu is a good bargain for the dancers. The terracotta pots and wind chimes from Andhra Pradesh would add charm to your garden or courtyard.

Kids swarm near the Mysore stall at the entrance where wooden toys ranging from tops to kitchen sets to dolls are displayed in clusters. In bright blues and fierce red shades, butter silk sarees with block prints from Kashmir are light and easy to drape.

Peppy chains and ear loops from Mumbai’s Juhu Market are cheap and attractive.

Apart from Aranmula mirrors and lamps, there are the coconut shell curious from Kerala too lined up among the items. From the traditional coconut shell ladles to miniature coconut trees to cup and saucers the creativity is spell binding. The exhibition is on till September 23. Time: 10 am to 9.30 pm.

Putting it another way, there is scope for Three or Four Big Malls.
Big success of Big Bazar has made them launch a second megashop. Both faring well.
There are other mega shops like Pothys,QRS Square,Carmel Towers,...all having good footfall.
Trivandrum has 11 theatres in 1 km radius of City Centre ,most of which are in good condition. Some of the theatres will in future will get converted to malls.
