^ oh i see, i'll go there next time when i come down to portsmouth. no doubt it is one of the coolest towns in hampshire. i especially like the waterfront and a big residential tower near that area. of course the modern development next to the spinnaker tower is fantastic too. i was expecting to take plenty of pics of the new type 45 destroyers and astute class submarines but unfortunately i didn't get a chance to visit there and i thought it was a restricted area though

Do you mean these?

not a great pic - you need to go to Gosport side if you want to see them - as you say the area in which they are is restricted on the Portsmouth side.

Personally I prefer my one below in Gunwharf Quays

this residential highrise and the spinnaker tower are the only two things which dominate portsmouth skyline (they are visible from a distance as well)

there is a massive football pitch on the left side, i think it belongs to the royal air force and it's used by the soldiers

Gunwharf Quays is around 10 years old. While the Spinaker and Gunwharf towers are the tallest in the city they are joined by Admiral house, Zurich House, the Guildhall and a couple of social housing blocks in making up Portsmouths Skyline. A pic i took of it from the QM2 just outside Southampton.

Hard to believe the Spinnaker Tower has only been open since 2005, It was chosen by the city residents of Portsmouth and has become such an icon of the city!

A great collection of pictures - you most likely walked right past me several times without noticing.
And a nice addition cardiff - now we just need the Blade/No. 1 Portsmouth to hurry up so we can get some new talls on the skyline.

Nice pictures. What purpose does the Spinnaker Tower serve?

It has a viewing platform, cafe etc. I think it was one of those millennium projects. Like some other constructions - like the Angel of the North - it provides identity, pride, etc. I like it. In my view bearing in mind its history Portsmouth has had a rough deal over the years regarding reconstruction after the war compared to some other cities. And the decline in the Navy and shipping in general. It is only in recent times it has had some decent new development but thats just the view of any outsider!

After decades of abandonment it has recently been sold to Land Securities who developed Gunwharf and will most likely be demolished.

Your pretty much spot on there, very little development of any real quality had occurred in Portsmouth for decades. With the millennium and closure of HMS Vernon (the naval establishment which once occupied the gunwharf site) there was a massive opportunity to transform the city waterfront.
