Because religious sites are much more important and play a bigger role. It is also easier to renovate a few mosques/shrines than it is to built thousands of new buildings all over the country.

Moreover renovations such as those are supported by donations from the outside as well.

it is brand new but some similar aspect to the old designs, they will not put it on the world heritage simply because the multiple construction and the expansions they did.

I do not want them to put it on the UNESCO list because that means they can't do any construction, and this is a holy site not for its architectural value but for a religious one, just like what they did with Mecca they removed all the old structures because the holiness is in the site not in the building and of course to accommodate more people

Thank you for the explanation. Yes, I suspected that. But it still looks old and great at the same time. When that is the case we know that it has been a good piece of restoration.

What are the earliest descriptions of the shrines/mosques and the earliest photos? I have seen some from around year 1900 and it looked quite different.

My point is only that Iraq should have WAY more UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It is really a big mistake what we see now. I once wrote to them and asked why no more ancient Iraqi monuments were part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites but no answer. They are clearly ignoring people.

Makkah is a different matter. Much, much bigger. But still very regrettable that old Islamic buildings and the house of nabi (saw) was demolished. I know that some people started to worship those graves/shrines which is wrong according to Islam but still it is not acceptable in my eyes.

But at the same time - something many don't know about or realize - is that the Ottomans who ruled Hejaz changed much about the Two Holy Mosques, like the Mamluks before them, the Ayyubids, Fatimids and obviously the Hashemites. Also the surroundings around it. And future rulers will probably make changes as well.

One of the worst things in modern history is that they destroyed the holy house of the messenger. I still can't believe they did it!

Yes, stupid moves. But it must be honestly said that those places were used as places of worship which is obviously not in accordance with Islam. Especially not in the most holy place on earth.

Still shameful and I and most are all against it. But much was destroyed during other times which is as shameful. At least I just don't hope that more will be destroyed.

Nabi (swt) tomb is safe in Madinah and recently pictures were published from inside the Green Dome. One cannot see the actual grave though but it looks like it is left untouched.

But the decision on whether expanding Makkah or not is not a easy one to take. Makkah is a place of worship for Allah (swt) and the current people should be served now rather than old buildings. Of course this could happen in another way. Instead of demolishing it they could have removed it to a different location. Anyway I get angry when talking about it. This I will never understand.
