Kennedy Boulevard News and Discussion

I thought we already had a thread for Kennedy Boulevard for the discussion of the "Gateway to Tampa" idea but I couldn't find it anywhere. So, it's a new thread time!

I saw while driving by last week that they were totally gutting out one of the buildings across the street from the university, the one closest to the residential hall. I haven't seen anything on here and didn't know what could be going on, until a Google search on the current owners of the site (Oxford Exchange LLC).

I just checked and the case was withdrawn. So, hopefully that means it was resolved before the hearing...

This would be a great use for that site.

I read a article what it's suppose to be a couple years ago. I think open air restaurant and I think book store and a couple other small things simultaneously. I remember it took me a bit of work to find the article and I thinking was in TBO.

$100 says the issue was 'resolved', only if by 'resolved' you mean that the city staff told them to scale back the project to meet parking reqs.

Sounds like a cool project. However, once again we something that appears to be a great addition to the area closing up at 5:30pm. Hyde Park, UT, and downtown are on it's doorstep and this place will shut down during rush hour, seems kinda silly to me. The fact that it is going to have a coffee shop, tea stand, and a bookstore should warrant staying open to to at least 9pm or even 10pm.

There's probably 2 dozen or more UT students that would love to go there at 9 pm for a study group or study by themselves. I agree, staying open past 5:30 would be logical. They'll likely change that after a couple months.

That would be my guess... Start out open for hours you're confident will be profitable, and expand as business warrants.

I always wondered why that whole plaza wasn't developed into a college hang out spot with coffee houses shops and college bars/restaurants that stay open later, (the only thing over there is the retreat) so maybe this project will be the one to get that started.

UT's resident population is also finally big enough to sustain a few hangouts. Wasn't quite big enough before. The new dorm will only add to it.

UT fought against the Retreat (who ended up getting their liquor license renewed on a loophole based on a photo of liquor being served there a very long time ago) so I would imagine they are hostile to any similar establishments.

So I drove past the new UT dorm project today along with the adjacent construction for the TGH project (I think it is?) and it appears that a parking lot is what is going to be bordering Kennedy Blvd. and you can clearly see the parking lot lights erected.

Someone please tell me I am seeing things!

No, you saw correctly.

Welcome to Tampa, where surface parking is the pinnacle of our existence!

Looks like Primrose Schools is constructing a new school of "South Tampa" at 1700 W. Kennedy Blvd., according to their website it's expected to be open by the fall of next year. Driving past the site looks like construction is to begin soon.

As for the TGH project, I thought a parking garage and or building of some sort was supposed to go there?

There is/was suppose to be a parking garage for the project. This project needs renderings!
