hmm I did not know that interesting.

I just found this article http://www.tampabay.com/news/localgo...levard/1138559

I read it and unless I am reading to much into it and trying to make something out of it that's not, I would say this is what's happing. A quick measurement in Google Earth of this site plus the existing site that Corporate Center is now on, is ballpark 490 feet.

Basically the article insinuates that the site we are discussing, has been planned to be a 457 space parking lot surrounded with a 6 foot tall fence similar to UT's.

^That is the old plan. The one they went back to the city for since then, that Koopalicious posted about, is the amended plan.

Perhaps, they are building this surface lot and plan to move the parking from the site near the Neighborhood Walmart to this site and then begin construction over there for their other proposed project.
It was more wishful thinking that they were for the entrance way for the whole project. Guess another wish for Tampa got ruined.

I was going to drive down there too today and see what was up. But after 2 calls for different shifts to come in to work today while still in class, I knew I would get another call later in the day. Which happened.

If all is a surface parking, what the heck happened to the plan? It seems like right after they completed the renovation of the existing building, they threw out this plan for office and residential units only months after. I was almost certain that with the work being done, and how long it was taking, that they were going through with the whole development.

Again, Fernandez said, the appearance shouldn't be a problem. Between Kennedy and the parking lot will be a sidewalk with concrete panels and brick trim, 24 feet of landscaped setback and the UT-style fence.
I would not expect anything else unless you see a report on it. Maybe one day they will build the "amended" project, but who knows. This is a govt hospital and a city govt. Do you expect something good?

Here is a brief article related to TGH confirming what we have already discussed regarding the surface lot http://83degreesmedia.com/devnews/tgh091812.aspx

Also Oxford Exchange across from UT, should be opening Monday good news on that front.

So what will they do for parking once they decide to go ahead with the parking garage and mixed-use building? Of course, they'll do the garage first. But still, the garage will use up a good chunk of the lot.

And why did they make an amended version when they weren't going ahead with it baffles me.

I haven't seen anyone mention the new Primrose school going in on Kennedy, pretty close to the UT lacrosse field. It's another depressing project--full block but mostly just one floor. Here's the rendering:

As depressing as it is of a development, it is far better than nothing.

I don't understand the point of having a school on Kennedy. Couldn't they have found a cheaper property elsewhere and used the extra money to - oh, I don't know - improve the school/learning experience itself?

It also seems like a horrible idea to put a school for small children fronting a major road

I think this is far worse than nothing. It locks up a nice piece of land for a poor use.

I'm sure they have their reasons for building in that location, but this facility seems far better suited to a suburban location, if you ask me. But they didn't. :-)

Yes, their reason is they have the land and a franchise license. That does not mean it's the best use for a city block on the "Gateway to Tampa". The same goes for UT's ridiculous decision to build a lacrosse field fronting Kennedy (across the street from this day care).

Let's pray they won't get a School Zone that will slow Kennedy down to more of a crawl.

There is all this talk of developing the western side of the river. This school doesn't help. It should have went somewhere else.

It's not on the river or really all that close (~15 blocks or so).

I think the whole Kennedy "Gateway" idea is kaput now. This school combined with everything UT has done and the Tampa general parking lot pretty much killed the Gateway notion.

As for why this they decided to build a elementary school fronting one of the busiest roads in Tampa is beyond me, something like this belongs in a neighborhood setting.
