GOOD NEWS PO!
Malacañang approves LRT-2 extension up to Antipolo City Written by Fernan J. Angeles Thursday, 30 August 2012 00:00 font size decrease font size increase font size Print Rate this item 1 2 3 4 5 (3 votes) After months of review, the investment coordinating committee of the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda) Board has finally approved a project that will extend the reach of the country’s electric mass railway system to the outskirt provinces of Metro Manila. In approving the Light Railway Transit (LRT) Line 2 East Extension Project, the elevated railway system traversing Marcos Highway, Aurora Boulevard and Claro M. Recto Avenue would be extended on its northeastern tip, reaching as far as Antipolo City in Rizal. Under the NEDA-approved project, LRT Line 2 would embark on engineering and structural design as well as the construction of a 4.19- kilometer extension seen stretching from the existing Santolan Station in Pasig City to Masinag Junction in Antipolo City, Rizal. The total approved cost of the LRT Santolan (Pasig)-Masinag Junction (Antipolo) Line extension project is P9.76 billion which will have two additional stations located at Emerald Drive in Cainta, Rizal and Masinag Junction, aside from the existing Santolan station. With the completion of the extension project, total length of the LRT Line 2 will now stand at around 16.75 kilometers. It was Malacanang which earlier had imposed a policy requiring all calendared infrastructure programs — including that of the LRT Line 2 extension — to undergo review to ensure usability and integrity of the project. Rizal Gov. Jun Ynares III, who has been personally facilitating the approval of the project which he described as very essential for the province, requested Transportation Secretary Mar Roxas to include the extension project in the department’s priority projects. With Neda giving the green light, the Department of Transportation and Communications (DoTC)is expected to start the process seen to materialize a project that has been on the government drawing board for about a decade. While the LRT Line 2 project is originally designed to reach as far as Quezon Province (via Marcos Highway), an extension is expected to provide rapid and reliable mode of transit to Rizal constituents while allowing open access to trade and commerce to strategic commercial, industrial and educational districts in Metro Manila. Upon learning of the good news, the Rizal governor cited Neda and the DoTC for seriously considering their appeal to get the long overdue project back on track. “On behalf of Rizal province’s constituents, I would like to express the gratitude of Rizaleños to Secretary Roxas’ representations that resulted in the approval and construction of our requested LRT Line 2 East Extension Project, seen to greatly benefit us and our province’s commerce,” Ynares said. |
