A mayor for Birmingham will be another step in the right direction if they are given similar powers to Boris, but i doubt it.

Indeed a Mayor for Birmingham (not Wolverhampton, Coventry, et al).

Unlike the muscular, all-conquering GMCA which holds sway across all tribes in Greater Manchester.

Barcelona and Madrid are both important in Spain while the small cities in the Basque region are as rich as either of those.

Of the big countries only France is really in a similar position to the UK.
And as far as things like transport projects (which this thread has focused on) are concerned, even France has done far more outside Paris than we have outside London.

Possibly, though not only have they built high speed railways to most corners of the country but (having just looked it up) there are also Metro systems in 5 cities outside Paris, tram systems in 21 cities outside Paris with more on the way...

In 2000 Labour had a policy to build about 20 tram systems by 2010, that was dropped very quickly and we have seen no sign of the government changing its mind on that since.

The northern cities are doomed if all you northerners seem to do is squabble about which second rate city is playing a distant second fiddle to London...

Pool your resources... get an umbrella government.. and start working together for more clout...

It reminds me of a space programme I watched not too long ago about galaxies.. the smaller ones join together and make bigger ones that in turn suck in more smaller ones and then in the end you are left with one large solar mass that dominates everything... thats London now...

The northern cities could work on becoming like the small ones merging together and go from there.. then in the future the UK could have two huge masses...

.. like the Milky Way and Andromeda ... which are on a course for collision too... to make a super massive solar mass... then the UK could just turn into a massive city...

... like Coruscant!

Garderobes!

Why fly to the dump when you can just take a dump on the people below?

Amusing the OP started this thread with apparent curiosity, yet has gradually turned into a bit of an arse.

The subject seems to have been exhausted .. I was initially curious but now not so much. If you've got nothing remotely interesting to add.. stfu.

Well it's sky bar isn't it.

I would have liked a keen and intelligent conversation about how devolved powers could be achieved, what powers they would be, how this would be financed and how this inter plays with the National government and the other nations and regions.

But no, it's a pretty picture of a future Wolverhampton and a French medieval bog.

Enjoy!

The problem is that London suffers from the fact it gives more to Westminster than it gets back and yet there is underinvestment and spending cuts.

Plus a lot of the polices they have done have gone againt the interests of London...

If it isn't enough then London is no longer viable. It received unparalleled investment compared to its neighbours. You've discredited your argument.
