Sint-Truiden- Belgium's capitol of fruit.

For the first time I'll show my own living place in the international section. I don't expect it to attract a lot of attention but wanted to show it anyways. It has some monumental architecture for a little town that doesn't go un-noticed.

Sint-Truiden is a little town of 40.000 inhabitants located south corner of the Belgian Province Limburg in Flanders. It's the center of the Belgian fruit industry and the fruit from the orchards is sold worldwide as far as China.

I made these pictures in bigger time span. So the quality will differ a lot as will the seasons. They are just made with a small pocket digital camera. Don't expect great quality.

We start at the central market square, wich is kinda sad because it serves as a big parking lot.

The belfort tower and old city hall building. It now serves as a tourist information bureau.

The only Gothic church in the town:

Nice. Thanks for sharing. I'm going to Belgium in a few weeks so some of us are definitely interested in these pictures :-)

You should show on a map where this is.

Like very much this kind of threads from places that are not very much known. Show very well the atmosphere of the country where they are and Sin Truiden is a great example.

It is very sad that major squares with great historic buildings are transformed into parking lots, I´ve seen this mainly in France and is such a pitty... hope someday this will change. Besides, that renaissance church is very stiylized and looks great

By the way, what kind of fruits do you plant there and which one is exported to China? this intrigues me...

Thanks for your reply!

Apples and pears are mainly grown in the area. And it's also the apples and pears that are sold worldwide. There is also grown strawberries but they are only sold in Belgium. There are also some vineyards in the region.

I don't have any pictures about surrounding landscapes, maybe I'll make some. Here is a pictures of how the country side looks this time of the year:

and this is the region of wich Sint-Truiden is the biggest town: (Hasselt is the capitol of the Province but doesn't make part of the region)

The main shoppingstreets that lead to the market square. As you can see, cars everywhere. Sint-Truiden is estimated to attract some 100.000 people living in the region for shopping...
You can see these shopping streets as the average Belgian provincial town shopping streets.

Typical old houses for this region:

This part of town was a poor part during the industrial revolution;

Indian food shops near the trainstation:

The street that connects the old city center with the 18-19thth century station area. Station area's seem to be to most delerict places of Belgian towns in most cases... The last set of pictures and this set looks kind of depressing, mainly due to the weather they where taking in...But some parts look bad.

In the back you see the train station:

Derelict buildings in the same street:

Side street:

I think Sint-Truiden is an inderrated city in Belgium. It's got plenty of historical churches adn great monuments. It's sad to see all the cars in the streets and especially on the main square. Fortunately things are changing and more and more Belgian cities make their central squares and narrow streets car-free or low-traffic.
