I hope that's sarcasm because if not, I would personally invite YOU to live there.

Chinese people deserve better and does not need to live in these congested run-down town just for you or tourist to "feel" what's "authentic" or not because it's not even authentic or an ancient town. Now If you're arguing for better pedestrian roads, then I suggest a better wording.

I have, and our company's dormitory for our Chinese workers also exists in such a place. I have a familiarity with this market in Shenzhen.

It is a profound fallacy that the "farmer's houses" (农民房, the sort of building that makes up the above picture) are somehow intrinsically tenement-like. Of course, there are nice "farmer's houses" and there are those of the rather unlivable variety. Yet often, the quality of the flat that you can find in the above picture surpasses some of the older highrises, and is decidedly more livable than many of the holes-in-the-wall that pass for apartments in Hong Kong.

Ultimately, what these areas provide is an attractive place for poorer migrants to come, live, and do business... resulting intensely vibrant street life. I have heard that Shenzhen's 'urban villages' house roughly 50% of the migrant population. Demolishing Gangxia was perhaps inevitable given its location, but demolish too many and Shenzhen becomes a decidedly different city.

...
I agree on that one, having lived for a few months in new 'nail house' in Nanshan district, and than moved to a full private apartment. The nail house had better walls, finishes, elevators and more, but yes the surrounding was a bit more awful, as no trees or other greenery, and mosquitoes were an issue. The tall apartment tower was smack on top of metro station and very convenient, but the wall paint peels off, lift floor breaks, etc.

One explanation I heard for 'good nail houses' is coz very often their very owners choose to live on the top floor. Such house will inevitably be well built.

Either way, Gemdale is a darn good looking development for Gangxia, helps fill in the void between the current Futian high rise cluster and the Shennan / Huaqiang Lu cluster. Now, what we need is a 700+ m tower near Gemdale to mirror the Ping'an on the other side of the greenfield..

I hope builders are keeping an eye on quality when it comes to the newer residential buildings. Don't want to see any falling over. I think a 700+ m will be a good thing for Shenzhen. Such a great city, really deserves it.

Thanks for the picture update kanye.

Agreed, solid planning and good design (such as here and the proposed project in Caiwuwei) definitely can make up for the loss of these areas.

That said, the worry is, I suppose, that in 20 years will there be any of these areas remaining? Not only are they interesting/walkable/cheap, but they provide an essential platform for new migrants into Shenzhen to live, work, and start a business. The demolition of Gangxia wasn't all too destructive, as many of these migrants moved to the 'other' Gangxia across the street, or down the road into Shazui. But what will happen if Shazui is demolished? Xiasha? Huanggang? A city of immigrants needs places to... put its immigrants.

The most worrying development as of right now is the planned demolition of Baishizhou, which would leave 140,000 people homeless (to put that in perspective, that's higher than the entire population of Bern).

I didn't realize that this development is pretty much in the center of Shenzhen near Ping An and Shenzhen Convention center. Nice prime location.
