Regional Mass Transit System

Phuket LRT | 41.7 km

The results of the study on the suitability, design and analysis of environmental impacts of the Phuket Mass Transit System for the light rail transit (Tramway) was completed on May 2017. The route of the project will be from the Phuket International Airport to the Chalong Intersection valued at 30,154 million baht with the total distance of 41.7 km. The project is included in the PPP Fast Track of the Ministry of Transport's 2017 PPA. The MRTA will be responsible for the implementation of the PPP project.

Khon Khaen LRT | 22.8 km

The progress of the public transport development plan in four provinces in Khon Kaen, Chiang Mai, Nakhon Ratchasima, and Hat Yai, Songkhla province are expected to be completed this year and starting the project in 2018.
For Khon Kaen, OTP is in the process of preparing a detailed master plan for public transport and environmental impact for the north-south route. (Samran - Tha Phra) The distance is about 22.8 km and is the most appropriate route to develop a pilot project by using light rail transit (LRT)

Chiang Mai LRT | 36 km

For Chiang Mai, OTP is studying and preparing a master plan. Currently undergoing comparative analysis to select the route in the urban area between the alternative route running on the ground and underground. There are 3 lines in total of 36 km with 35 stations, the study progress is 90% complete, and will accelerate to be completed this August.

Nakhon Ratchasima LRT | 54.4 km

Nakhon Ratchasima LRT is under study and is currently defining three public transit routes, the study will be completed in August.

Hat Yai Monorail | 12.54 km

For Hat Yai, the Songkhla Provincial Administrative Organization had studied the appropriate route, which is a 12.54 km long monorail system with 12 stations and a total investment capital of 16,100 million baht. Currently the environmental impact report is being revised.

Even Phitsanuloke is going to implement LRT network as the first section of BKK - Chiang mai high speed train is ending up at Phitsanuloke with the station on the existing Phitsanuloke railway station - eastern bank of Nan river - connecting with downtown Phitgsanuloke on the western bank at Naresuan Bridge (highway 12) and Boromtrailokkanart bridge

BTW, Chiang Mai LRT seems to be the at grade networks since the idea of digging up the tunnels across the old city within the city moat is not a good idea for the idea for the city which can be dated back to 12 April 1296

OTP going to help major cities in Thailand to implement LRT and monorail system with public and private joint venture including

1. Khon Kaen city which is going to implement LRT networks of 5 lines with total distance of 122 km and 93 stations - and the first line going along Friendship Highway from Samran (Northern suburb of Khon Kaen city) to Tha Phra (Southern suburb of Khon Kaen city) with the distance of 22.8 km and 16 stations - the study result will be done in August 2017 and this Khon Kaen LRT network is going to become a model for other cities to follow.

2. Phuket LRT from Phuket International Airport at Mai Khao Beach to Chalong intersection within downtown Phuket city (41 km - 21 stations) with future provision to extend to Thanun Railway terminus in Phang Nga (Opposite ot Tha Chatchai in Phuket) - MRTA is going to construct with private sector run services as Joint venture

3. Chiang Mai LRT networks with 3 lines 35 km - now delayed since the local Chiang Mai city citizens are pressing the demands for underground section within the city wall as they want the line to go through city wall of Chiang Mai instead of going at grade but this will going to create cost overrun due to the demand for underground section within the city wall while private sector would reluctant to invest in this expensive project

4. Nakhon Ratchasima LRT networks with 3 lines with total distance of 54.87 km and 64 stations - still getting lukewarm response despite of growing traffic jam within Khorat city - and the study is 15% progress

5. Hatyai City Monorail - 12.54 km with 12 stations - 8400 million Baht - detailed design done but still pending for EIA clearance while TAO of Songkla is still planning for Joint venture investment

6. Phitsanuloke LRT networks - it will take time as the line must cover both eastern and western bank of Nan river including the line that goes along Highway 12, Naresuan University in Southern suburb of Phitsanuloke, and the line to Phitsanuloke railway station which is going to be upgraded to handle High Speed train.

7. Udonthani city - asking for budget for Budget year of 2018

Khon Kaen rail bids set for year end
24 Jul 2017 at 09:27
WRITER: POST REPORTERS

By Chanyut Suphakunpinyo

The auction for a 15-billion-baht light rail network in Khon Kaen is expected to be held at the end of this year, said Khemchart Somjaiwong, chairman of Khon Kaen's chamber of commerce.

Mr Khemchart said the rail network will have 16 stops, spanning 22.6 kilometres. The current plan aims to make island platforms for the trains on Mittraphap Road, running from the Tha Phra locality to the Samran locality in Khon Kaen's Muang district.

Plans for the light rail transit (LRT) project are currently awaiting approval from the cabinet.

Once the cabinet approves the project, the auctioning process will begin.

Mr Khemchart said several private companies in Khon Kaen are interested in investing in the project.

He said both Thai and foreign private companies are welcome to bid in the auction.

Upon its completion, the rail will be the Northeast's first electric train system, he said.

Khon Kaen's light rail network is part of a government initiative to establish a "Smart City" project by improving people's quality of life.

Theerasak Theekhayuphan, Khon Kaen Municipality mayor, said the municipality is also currently observing the initiative.

"We are currently following seven degrees of 'Smart': Smart People, Living, Environment, Economy, Mobility, Governance and Education," he said.

Mr Theerasak added Khon Kaen has plans to construct a waste disposal plant that converts waste into electricity, in accordance with the "Smart Environment" model.

According to him, the plant can dispose of 600 tonnes of waste per day.

Mr Theerasak also said the municipality has set up a company aimed to address "Smart Mobility" by looking to find long-term solutions to common traffic-related issues in the province.

The company, called Khon Kaen Transit System Co, Ltd (KKTS), has been registered under the Ministry of Interior, he said.
