Jobs await Filipino workers at Canadian shipyard
By: Tina G. Santos

MANILA, Philippines – Potential jobs await Filipinos at a shipyard in Canada which was awarded a 30-year contract to build warships for the Royal Canadian Navy.

Officials of Irving Shipbuilding Inc. (ISI), the largest shipbuilder in Canada with headquarters in Halifax, Nova Scotia, hinted at the jobs to a Philippine team that visited the area last week, the Department of Foreign Affairs said.

ISI conveyed “keen interest” in “exploring possible synergies in a variety of sectors and services with the Philippines,” according to the foreign office.

“ISI indicated that the Filipino work ethic is known worldwide and noted fine standards as evident in ships that have come to dock in Halifax that were built by Filipinos,
” the DFA said.

It added that Tim Brownlow, director of government affairs and business development, credited the advanced skills and experience of its workers for clinching the Royal Navy project and acknowledged the work ethic of Filipino crew members he has had to personally work with.

Ayala Corp. invests in infrastructure, water firms in Vietnam

Quote:
MANILA, Philippines — The Ayala group has strengthened its foothold in Vietnam, one of Southeast Asia’s rising stars, with the acquisition of a significant minority interest in a leading infrastructure company and a bulk water supply company both based in Ho Chi Minh City.

In a press statement late Wednesday, Ayala Corp. and its subsidiary Manila Water Co. announced that they had won the right to buy a 10-percent stake in Ho Chi Minh City Infrastructure Investment Joint Stock Co. (CII) and a 49 percent stake in Kenh Dong Water Supply Joint Stock Co. (Kenh Dong).

“This investment primarily supports and complements the expansion of Manila Water Co. as it gradually builds its presence in Vietnam. At the same time, this also provides strategic access to other related infrastructure opportunities which may be of value to the group,” Ayala president and Manila Water chair Fernando Zobel de Ayala said.

This is expected to benefit the suburban districts of District 12, Tan Phu and Binh Tan, where water coverage is very low, averaging at about 50 percent of the population.

Currently, Kenh Dong has a bulk water supply contract with Saigon Water Corp. (SAWACO) for a guaranteed volume of 150 mld. SAWACO is the state-owned enterprise managing the water supply system in Ho Chi Minh City.

THE VENANCIO quality leather shoes store has managed to stay alive despite onslaught of malls.

Local shoe company thrives amid competition from malls, imports

DAGUPAN CITY— Nowadays, designer shoes are readily available for the well-heeled, while cheap footwear from China have protected the soles of the ordinary folk. But a local store offering made-to-order shoes continues to thrive despite the competition.

And it’s not because the store owner, Venancio Medina, 55, looks and moves so much like President Benigno Aquino, including the way he tilts his head and smiles, but it is because the leather footwear he produces are of high quality and reasonably priced.

si Pnoy yan but seriously, Venancio needs rebranding ng shoes and store nya. as more and more Pinoys become more sophisticated, I don't think his business will survive with that kind of branding.
