He was a great Prime Minister, but he'd needed more as a Mayor for Sydney, to fix this cities serious problems.

And he would be good here too.

I'm not sure whether he saw himself as chirac, or mitterand, or de gaulle, or louis napoleon. If the latter, he would find his haussmann and fix sydney for good.

I'd be his Haussmann!

Seriously though, of all the candidates so far Clover is (regrettably?) the best person for the job. The ALP candidates are all NIMBYs stating things from the current council isn't ambitious enough with its energy cuts and the 'Toaster on Steroids' is definitely a no go, to locations for adventure parks to the 'overdevelopment' of the Ashmore Estate.

Shayne Mallard whines about Clover and doesn't offer any legitimate policy in return (Abbott-lite?)

And it's hard to take Monte seriously (his wife runs an Escort service, seriously?)

Plenty of good books eg designing australias cities, about the royal commission and the turn of the c20th plans for sydney, including demolition of large swathes of it. Wide straight boulevards and edwardian streetlighting. Add in bradfields transport system, it would have been a sight to behold.

I'm just not convinced that Monte is the right guy to Lord Mayor of Sydney. Some of his plans like rangers enforcing curfews is silly. The police are the ones who are meant to move people on.

The idea that pubs should be allowed to trade 24 hours doesnt go down with me and it wont go down well with inner city residents. It will only favour the drunks.

The review of state planning laws is the only item I support him on, but sadly that doesnt appear to be as high up on his list as it should be.

Personally, I'm not impressed with the quality of the candidates so far. We need some big names to step forward.

Shayne, who I know, is a part of that curious breed of gay politically active Liberals. He's quite a nice guy but I don't agree with his politics.

He was biting pillows way back but he is a legend in australian history.

Just like the TV towers on mt dandenong or mt coottha, only a few men stand high on the horizon, looking down on the australian people. Curtin, chifley, whitlam, hawke, keating and rudd, plus monash, coombs, bradfield, whitton, the list isnt very long.

These men brought vision and determination to an apathetic, self absorbed population. Gave them their tough love and bitter medicine. Australians think they are blessed, they are not. At best they are lucky, but the luck will run out, as it always done.

When that day comes, we will need pjk back, or someone like him. Gillard and the Mad Monk wont cut it.

You lucky thing. I can top that though. My aunt and uncle, Sonya and Jose, lived in the same apartment building as Keating throughout the late 90s-early noughties. They said he was always funny and self-deprecating when they'd run into him at the elevator.

If that were true then "most Australians" would be idiots. Keating deserved one last term to finish what he started. He would have completed the transition to a republic. He beats Howard there are then, without mentioning the dozens of major economic reforms he'd already implemented and more he planned.

Howard won because he used fear, hatred and ignorance to win votes, which only got worse as the years wore on - the blatant race-baiting over refugees, his failure to denounce Hansonism and hysteria over Asian immigration etc etc etc. We traded a visionary leader in Keating for a blatantly dishonest, gutless, backwards looking man child in Howard. Its not a partisan issue, its about leaders and their character, and in that regard, I think if you really talked through each party's achievements and mistakes with the average man on the street, he'd agree that 96 was a mistake.

Ahhh! Yep I think your point about electing Howard proves that.

Many Aussie PM's have had same-sex experiences.

Yep, Keating is a real character. I'd also see the Whitlams in the Inner East, where they also live.

I think Keating would win if he stood for council. There are more people than you think out there that realise that Sydney needs to move forward in terms of development. People are frustrated that vocal minorities are hindering the progress of the city at every corner.

Think of his comments on Barangaroo last year. He actually won alot of friends for standing up to Clover Moore.

The one near the Rocks? If it's the one I'm thinking of, it's a stunning luxury tower, with marble staircases and huge gilt framed pieces of artwork in the foyer. Whenever I visited a friend there your name had to be in the guest book before the security guard would let you up, lol.

I don't think we should be restricting times for when businesses should or should not open. I'd love to see more 24-7-anything in this city.. restaurants, stores, I even think trains should run 24-7 on Fridays + the weekend (but preferably all the time but I suppose that may not not be practical for trackwork reasons and so on.. I wonder how New York does it?)
