As I understand it (unless things have changed since the last time I checked this thread) the plan is to remove all exterior elements (windows, metal, etc.) and gut the building leaving only the frame. Then they'll start building on top of that. It should be an interesting process to watch.

Unfortunately, the old building still appears to be in use.

I thought that the leases don't expire until 2015.

As much as the new tower is intriguing (although not my favorite design out of the options presented) I'm just exceedingly happy about the ugly building being torn down. What an eyesore. It's fantastic that one more 60's pile of rubbish is being deleted from the NY city-scape. That's a major victory in itself. Ny's office stock is looking a little long in the tooth compared to competitors elsewhere, and I'm sure the trend will continue as more offices age. Less ugly metal piles from the awful decades of the mid-late 20th century and more glassy bright inviting structures is what I want to see.

I want brick and earthstone too to be more incorporated but I do like glass if it's not lazily used and the building doesn't just become a boxy glass pile of nothing. Definitely looks great for this one.... the building's going to look so much better in a few years once they finally get it done.

425 is a Park Avenue Tower!! I think it looks great considering the architecture along the avenue is very conservative just like NYC's new icon... 432 Park.

As per today's NYT, Kaye Scholer, which was the biggest tenant has already vacated. I wonder who is left ?

Not sure. Maybe not that much more. According to WSJ article dated March 2014, it mentions the timeframe for this project.

Quote:
Mr. Levinson said he plans to begin dismantling the 1950s building on the site at the end of the year and expects to be finished with construction by late 2017

There are less and less lights on at night as tenants appear to be moving out, particularly from the top. If you look closely, about 2/3 of the way up by the left corner, it appears that part of the cladding was blackened by some sort of fire related incident.

Looking at the ocean for days on end would work up quite a lustful appetite when shore arrives. This is what these buildings do. They set your mind at peace and calm, and when the occasional stunning building is viewed it is all the more appreciated as the contrast reigns supreme. It's a zen concept.
These pirate metaphors are going to wear everyone out quickly btw
