Another major city was Poznań, capable of organising 4,000 shield bearers and 1,300 armour bearers during the reign of Boleslaw I of Poland according to chronicler Gallus Anonymous

Phases of the fortified site in Poznań between the 940s and 980s AD

In ca. 843 AD Bavarian Geographer listed over 1200 settlements on the territory of Poland, so there's still so much to discover. Some could be impressive if "a very powerful pagan prince, who had a seat at Wisła/Vistula [v-Vislě]" known from "The Life of Saint Methodius" (ca. 885 AD) really existed and duke Siemowit (9th century AD) was as powerful as described by Gallus Anonymous.

Poznań in the early 17th century

I visited the Solidarity centre recently and I must say it exceeded my expectations. Spectacular example of contemporary architecture. I think or rather hope that the WWII Museum will be an as spectacular exemplar of deconstructivist architecture. Looks promising.

Early medieval hill forts in Polish lands in the 6th to the 8th centuries - https://www.academia.edu/1460344/Ear...l_organization

Hill fort in Hacki (6th-7th century AD)

Perhaps the Slavs started to build hill forts after they risen up against the Avars/Huns sometime before 630s AD ("Fredegar’s Chronicle") in case of another invasion. The Huns penetrated deep into Europe in the mid-5th century AD.

forts or some type of defensive strategic enclosure were often the embryos of old cities. not all evolved beyond that. I think in that sense RS-UK-PL's post is intriguing and thought provoking as these were the earliest known Polish/Slavic settlements/cities in these regions.

A LOT ... every major city in Poland has at least one or two under construction. Some are the kind of hybrid interactive education & museum expositions, which apparently people here dig a lot, so every city wants one
