The right one is the Josephskirche. Wow! Lot's of old and beautiful architecture there. I've never heard of the city, but it seems to have a rich history. A pleasant town to live and wander around, that's for sure.

Speyer claims to be Germany's 3rd oldest city.. 15BC. (But so do a lot of other German cities ;-)
During the 1000 year Holy Roman Empire period many cities were "favored" and during the time of the Salian and Hohenstaufen kings (1024-1250) Speyer was much favored by the Kaiser's (Emperor's) of that era. During much of that period there was a lot of struggle between the Kaiser's and the Popes over many issues, such as who got to pick the Bishops and Archbishops (the investiture issue that lead Salian Kaiser Henry IV to be excommunicated and later repented (1077) in front of the castle in Italy at Canossa. The Cathedral at Speyer was built as a testament to the power of the Kaisers, and it was made larger than old St. Peters in Rome, at the time the largest church in the world. Kaiser Conrad II founder of the Salian (Salier) Dynasty that ruled for a century (1024-1125) started the cathedral on such a grand scale... that the entire population of that region of the Rheinland could easily hold simultaneous service in the Cathedral. It was finished within a generation, and a generation later was remodeled (the wooden flat roof was replaced by one of the first pointed arch vaulted roofs in the world). The Salian Emperors were all buried in the crypt of Speyer Cathedral, and it became the pantheon of sorts for many Hohenstaufen and later Kaisers. Kaisers were crowned Kings of Germany at Aachen Cathedral (Charlemagne's 9th century church)... later switched to Frankfurt, since it was closer to Vienna (home of the Hapsburg Kaiser's). But a King had to make the pilgrimage to Rome (or elsewhere) to be crowned Kaiser (Emperor) by the pope... otherwise they were still known as only Kings (or uncrowned Kaisers). 8 Kaisers (4 crowned, 4 uncrowned) lie in the crypt at Speyer, more than anywhere else, except Vienna, where 12 later Hapsburg Kaisers are buried in the crypt of the Capuchin Church. FYI, here are the burial locations of many of the Kaisers (Holy Roman Emperors)...
