I'm guessing all those temporary wartime buildings were replaced by the Pentagon?

Yeah, those were part of the War Department's massive expansion ahead of the Pentagon completion in 1943.

Note that a few "horseless carriages" are visible in the Union Station photo. I think a couple of them could be electric. It also appears that the railroad had also been electrified by that point. The modern era was dawning!

Can't help but notice how crisp and clean the platform area looks in that 1906 photo. I realize it was almost new, but it's obvious they took pride in how things were kept in those days. I would be curious to see a photo taken from that same vantage point today. Guaranteed there would be trash and junk everywhere.
