Chartered flight from Russia heralds tourism season

Heralding another tourism season and raising hopes of a fair arrival of tourists to God’s Own Country, chartered flight operations from Russia commenced on Sunday with a flight from Moscow touching down at the Thiruvananthapuram international airport.

The chartered flight that arrived via Goa landed at 2 p.m. It had 32 tour operators from Russia aboard. The Russian tourists who were on the flight had disembarked at Goa. Later, the tour operators left for the beach resort of Kovalam where they will be put up.

The tour operators are here to visit the tourism destinations in and around the State capital and to popularise the destination in Russia on their return after the 10-day familiarisation tour.

A flight from Ekaterinburg, the fourth largest city in Russia, with 185 tourists will touch down at the airport at 9.45 a.m. on Monday. The flight will also arrive via Goa.

Chartered flights from Ekaterinburg will arrive every week till May 18 and those from Moscow till May 26. Tourists from Ekaterinburg will spend a minimum of 13 nights at Kovalam and those from Moscow 10 nights.

Since 2009, no chartered flights have touched down at the State capital, mainly owing to poor response from foreign tourists. Kovalam’s potential was badly hit by the lack of chartered flight operations. The arrival of the chartered flight after three years has cheered up the travel trade at the beach resort as 450 rooms in the upmarket and budget hotels have been booked.

The chartered tourists are being flown in by the Russia-based Pegas Touristik and the direct flights will be operated by Orenair (Orenburg Airlines) and Nordwind Airlines. SITA-Kuoni Destination Managers are the local handlers of the chartered tourists. “The response to the first five flights is good,” a tour operator associated with the chartered flights said.

Though Kerala is touted as a 365-day destination, the arrival of chartered flights from Gatwick in the U.K. used to signal the start of the four-month peak season commencing in November.

It is for the first time that chartered flights from Russia are arriving to kick off a tourism season in the State.

Valiyathura Pier

One more item in the memorandum submitted to CM, Shri Oommen Chandy, by TDF is being implemented.

Already the work is underway at the premises and as far as we understand it is related to parking bays and new look for the port office.

Mr.Shiva Kumar deserves special mentioning for the interest he has shown. The Shanghumugham beautification project is also progressing, work commenced at the old children’s park end.

Let’s hope the authorities will finish these projects in a time bound manner.

I also want to be part of TDF, as one of its member. What are the formalities?
Have lot of dreams and vision for this great and wonderful city. TDF can be a good forum to share the dreams.

Thanks Chandru for all your efforts . Could you also submit a Memorandum to the CM regarding the fate of ICC Akkulam ? An RTI regarding the current status on this project will also help .

It is team work and hence on behalf of all the members, I express my gratitude for the appreciation.

The memorandum was submitted 1 year back and now it is time to know where we are on these projects and take the necessary follow-up actions. We are planning to file an RTI and ICCI Aakulam will be there in the list.

When we met MLA Wahid, [ICCCI is under his constituency] two months back, he confirmed that cabinet has given all the necessary clearance and the work should commence without much delay. Last heard, Raheja is selling portion of their holdings and RV Pillai’s RVP group is one prospective buyer.

Zoo celebrates new arrival

The City Zoo welcomed a new member on Tuesday afternoon. A baby calf was born to bison Sushama. With the delivery of the baby calf, the number of bisons in the zoo has risen to four. In addition to the two bisons Prithvi and Sushama, which were brought from Mysore zoo last year, there is Sundari, which was rescued from forest.

The zoo officials are elated as it was the first delivery of Sushama. According to zoo veterinarian Jacob Alexander, the health condition of the calf is not stable. However, he added that its condition is expected to improve in the coming days. “No one is allowed to go near the calf as its mother would be disturbed by human touch or scent. So, we are yet to identify its gender,” he said.

This is the first bison calf in the zoo after 1975. The zoo did not have any bisons for several years after the death of Bindu in 1998. The new calf has not been named yet.
