Good luck! It's one of the most important and best things you'll ever do in your life. :-)

Here in the US it is just a progression from riding a trike then to a bike then an automobile. Our high schools have been providing student parking lots for decades and generations of students. I bet, with not to much effort, we could find as many differences than we can similarities between our two countries and societies.

We are not so alike as some on here think we are.

I'm not actually getting a car. Petrol (which you guys call 'gas', despite it being a liquid) is very expensive here, as is insurance.

I'm just taking my test.

I'll still be using my bike a lot, and using public transport/walking.

There's no rush. If you don't need a car then don't buy one. Get one when the time is right. That's the great think about living in a city with great all round public transport. I wish we had a better public transport system here in West Yorkshire especially Leeds.

Keep using your bike as much as possible. I now have a GPS tracking app which knows my height, weight, age etc. Tracks where I go, how many miles I cover, I quickly I do them, how many calories I burn etc, all the while passing people stuck in their cars, not getting a work out and burning little to no calories.

Gas is short for gasoline!

oh and technically, its the vapor off the liquid that ignites and makes the engine work, ie the gas, and not the liquid itself.

Well I'm actually going to start walking places a lot more now because I have an app which tracks how much you walk, and for every mile you walk Samsung* give a pound to charity!

* I think it's Samsung. If anyone's bothered I'll check.

@Yoshef. I guess that makes sense? I'd still call it petrol though.

Did you mean petroleum? and we also have pavements, but we drive on them, we walk on sidewalks. I find nothing wrong with either description and I understand what is meant when either is used, and I certainly wouldn't make an issue out of it. Yes, indeed, keep your uniqueness, it is part of what defines us. Long may it be so.

Americans should try driving stick shift manual cars rather than automatics, see how they fare then.

That said, I do like driving an automatic car but a manual car is more interesting to drive.

I drive vehicles with a manual shifts when in Europe. Remember, the US has a love affair with the automobile and most of us can, and do, drive anything. But why "shift" when the vehicle can do it for you, automatically? Like they say, "Only fools and horses work and horses turn their arse to it".

Fuel efficiency, more control, better acceleration.

Carrie Bradshaw had an awful time trying to drive a manual or a gear stick car as she called it.
