It's about time someone started a thread for this project.

Oil Dome? I'd imagine that the Katz Group would put the "Rexall" name on the Oilers' new digs as well.

Is it true that Rexall Place is the oldest NHL arena in the league?

It takes balls to put forth a design like that and I think it's one of those that we don't think really know how it turns out until it's built. Either it will be great or awful. Kudos to them for taking a chance though and fingers crossed for great.

You do know on how stadium naming works right? Katz Group can't use Rexall as a name for the future arena.

Why not? Both arenas that the Kings have had in Sacramento were named ARCO Arena.

Arco -a.k.a. Atlantic Richfield Company- had corporate sponsorship of the old arena, and the current arena since it's conception. They paid the owners of the arena to name the arena after them for a while to sponsor the company, that's how it usually works.

The only way the new arena would be called Rexall is if the company would pay to have they're brand be sponsored.

And the deal includes the Katz Group, which still owns Rexall, kicking in C$100 million to the deal, which could be thought of as a naming rights fee. Your previous post seemed in imply that there was some legal hurdle to placing the Rexall name on the new arena. That was why I brought up the ARCO reference.

This building actually has rhyme, reason and continuity, for starters.

I like the design, those concourses look amazing. That sky-walkway looks really cool, but really dangerous. Hockey fans aren't exactly known as teetotalers.

Frankly I don't see how anyone can find this design "ugly". It is quite different, yes, but it is definitely not as "bold" as those Gehry museums or the ROM Crystal in Toronto.

Like someone else pointed out, Katz Group owns Rexall.

Plus, Amway had its name on the old Orlando Magic arena (Amway Arena) and now has its name on the new Orlando Magic arena (Amway Center).

I was thinking Katz Group could do the same.

Ugly: unattractive or unpleasant to look at; offensive to the sense of beauty; displeasing in appearance.

To me it fits that definition. Fortunately, I live outside of Canada, so you can't have me charged with thoughtcrime.
