Thanks for the comments.

There's a push to start bringing people into the core of the city, and the Phoenix Park development (the two newer-looking apartment buildings you photographed) is at the forefront of that, hopefully it works.
I am glad you enjoyed the photos. Downtown Eau Claire seemed pretty sleepy but it has good bones. It seems like the sort of place that could come back if it had the proper spark. I grew up in the rust belt so it didn't seem that bad to me, it is still intact, it just looks underloved.

Found one. The windows had people painted on them and the bigger windows below had a malt shop type scene. I can't believe it was destroyed!
I might be wrong but it looked like they were renovating that building, there was a big dumpster outside that looked like it was full of stuff torn out of the interior. If you like these photos keep your eye on this thread, this isn't my last cross border phototrip. I intend to keep doing this periodically. I want to do the area north and northeast of Hudson and also make a trip down to La Crosse. After that I may go farther afield, I like driving around Wisconsin.

Great photos and great thread!
I had never been to Eau Claire before but I was impressed by it. I got the impression that more time in the area would yield more good photos so I intend to go back but there are some other areas I want to photograph first.

I think the OP took those pictures before they added the murals. It's still completely empty though They city council has been trying for a while to get a buyer for the building and turn it into a mixed-use ground floor business with apartments on the top.

The thing I'm surprised by on that picture is look at the water level! I was just there taking some pictures a few weeks ago at the confluence of the Eau Claire and the Chippewa; I would have been a foot under water in that picture!

edit: you know, I should actually get evidence before I talk. I hadn't been past that building in a while and thought the murals were still there, I hadn't realized they took them down. Sorry!

If you're heading down to La Crosse to get some photos, you need to do yourself a favor and go to Alma, WI, just across the river from Kellogg, MN (you can't cross at Kellogg, you'd have to cross either at Wabasha/Nelson or Winona/La Crosse). It's a tiny little town built into the bluff, but it has a hidden gem in Buena Vista Park. If you go during sunset...well I guess I'll just let you see for yourself.

The photographer of the photo I posted said the pic was taken during the flood of 2010. And lets just hope Somnifor is correct about the building under-going renovations and that the murals will eventually be put back in place.

Very Cool. I'm finally going to get around to posting some Eau Claire photos. The Mural Building, It appears might be coming down as UWEC and a Developer in the area want to build a dorm and a new performing arts center for Eau Claire

upon further review can someone tell me how you attach pictures. I have several of Eau Claire, Minneapolis and the midwest in general. I looked at the FAQ and that didn't help. I just want to upload but it's telling me to put in a http:// address which doesn't make sense to me.. HELP!!!! =)

Thomas, you need to upload your photos to an external host site, like Photobucket, Flickr, etc. From there, you'll need to select the photo's URL, and then copy/paste into your thread between a forum image code, like this:

[ img ]http://www.photo.url.goes.here.jpg[ /img ]
(remember to delete the spaces before and after the brackets)

Hope that helps!

Ok, Think I got it figured out. Downtown Eau Claire is located in a bowl/valley and there are stairs in a few places that lead to downtown.

Don't put spaces after or before your brackets. Do it like this [img]

Oh, and when on Photobucket all you have to do is copy the img code by hovering your cursor over the thumb nail. A drop down window will appear giving you options, chose the img. Then right click where you want to post the pic and paste it.

Many fond memories of EC: I lived there for 6 years in the 1970s (studied at UWEC). I'd hoped to see some of the mansions that are near the U's lower campus--one in particular, a great Tudor affair. Maybe the next time you get there? Downtown does look quite down on its luck, I must say. Hopefully there will be a successful push to repopulate and bring some life back to it.

Thanks for the comments. I have some more photos, most still need to be processed but I will post what I have so far.

These are from the Trempealeau National Wildlife Reserve along the Mississippi, a very underrated slice of tranquility and natural beauty:

I love that area of the river valley—few spots in the Midwest are more beautiful!

We really are very lucky to live so close to so many gorgeous MN and WI state parks and wildlife reserves. I can't wait to head out to some of them this summer.

I agree Jennifer, you said it very well. Beautiful pics Somnifor, did you take these from the Minnesota side or are they from an island? I know the Mississippi can be very wide along the boarder.

These were taken on the Wisconsin side. There is a lot of swampy backwater in the reserve so it looks like an island but it isn't.
