Actually that article was referencing previous renders for the SLS Brickell project and not Miami overall (the earlier renderings looked really bland).

Another look at Rem Koolhaas's convention center proposal:

The Kings Of Edgewater Do Their First Luxury Building

Quote:
Melo Group is building Bay House, yet another residential tower to add to their long list of buildings in Edgewater, but this time they're making it a 'luxury' building, which means it'll have amenities like a fancier pool deck, a valet, private elevator entries, bigger common areas, and a nice gym. What it also has (and this is kind of a shocker for a luxury contemporary building in this city) are actual walls between you and the outside world. It's not a glass box, and in this city if your contemporary building isn't a glass box then it ain't luxury.

Why would anyone build a Cadillac tower in a Buick neighborhood?

The thing is, Edgewater is overall a Chevy neighborhood with contrasting Cadillac towers like Paramount Bay. Curbed specifically calls the aforementioned proposal a "luxury" tower simple because it's a glass box. Regardless of neighborhood and catering market, there are too many boxes in Miami. Paramount Bay is the way a condo tower should be built if you want something modern which isn't boring.

Daily Double!

Two skyscrapers, at 600 and 700 Biscayne Blvd. appear to be in the works:

600 Biscayne: 704 ft.

700 Biscayne: 709 ft.

exMiami

Quote:
"A developer has submitted plans to build a 704 foot tower at 600 biscayne boulevard in Miami.

The application was submitted to the FAA in March and indicates plans to commence construction in August 2014.

The application references a controversial previous proposal on the site in 2005. A condo tower called freedom square was eventually green-lighted by the city of Miami despite close proximity to the historic Freedom Tower.

Records show that Manuel Grosskopf controls a portion of the company that owns the site. Grosskopf has a number of other towers under construction or planned throughout the Miami area, including the adjacent 700 Biscayne and Chateau Beach in Sunny Isles. "

-Sandman @ exMiami
Before the 2008 market crash, a wall of towers including The [FAA disqualified] Empire World Towers, Paramount Park and 600 Biscayne Building was planned across from the AA Arena.

More from Curbed:

Could A Mysterious Megaproject Be Built Next To The Freedom Tower?

Quote:
It looks like the Chateau Group, which just recently submitted plans for a 704 foot tall project on the block surrounding Miami's Freedom Tower at 600 Biscayne Boulevard, has also submitted plans for a 709 foot tower on the block directly to the north at 700 Biscayne Boulevard, which they also own, according to the administrators at exMiami.org. On the one hand, this basically fills in the gap in Miami's skyline between the Freedom Tower and the ginormous Marina Blue condo tower two blocks away, but on the other hand its impact on the much smaller historic tower is still a total mystery.

There have been towers previously planned for both sites, so they may be the same designs, or not. The new tower at 600 Biscayne is about 50 feet taller than the one previously planned. It was called Freedom Square. The project at 700 Biscayne was called Paramount Park.

Miami has changed sooo much ever since I left the city, yet there are a lot of places that look like time has stopped. For example the area in Down Town, close to Overtown, where there is Wolfson Campus MDCC. That area is still the same as centuries ago. All that could be filled with highrises.

I hope whatever is going on the Freedom Tower block will make good use of the building. This is an excellent opportunity to preserve what's left of Miami's original beauty.

Construction Starts On Two 79th Street Apartment Towers

Quote:
A Curbed reader noticed that "the first dirty movers showed up this morning and work has begun on the Adler's big project" The Shorecrest Luxury Apartments, in the sweeping curve of the 79th Street Causeway as it descends to the mainland. A former Related Group project, the rather bland but nice Shorecrest is a pair of towers now under the aegis of developers the Adler Group. The project will be the first element of a long-hoped for revitalization of 79th Street from the bay to Biscayne Boulevard (where developers have recently snapped up a few major properties, including Biscayne Plaza and the former INS Building) and further west to the Little River.

Miami Dolphins, Miami-Dade County Strike "Unprecedented" Sun Life Stadium Renovation Deal: Stephen Ross

Quote:
The Miami Dolphins and Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez have reached "an unprecedented public-private partnership" to modernize Sun Life Stadium, team owner Stephen Ross announced Monday night.

Gimenez said earlier Monday that a framework for a deal to give funding from Miami-Dade County to the Dolphins for renovations to Sun Life Stadium was in place. The Dolphins would receive about $7.5 million a year in hotel taxes to renovate the Miami Gardens stadium if county voters approve, The Miami Herald reported.

"We look forward to working with the County Commission to ensure that the voters of Miami-Dade have the final say on creating more than 4,000 jobs and pumping millions of dollars into the local economy," Ross said in a statement. "When the people of Miami-Dade go to the polls, we are confident they will support this partnership, where the Dolphins will pay approximately 70 percent costs, will repay approximately $167 million to the state and county, will pay for 100 percent of any cost overruns during construction, and will be committed to staying in Miami-Dade for the next 30 years."

Commissioners are expected to meet Wednesday about the deal. If they agree, the plan would go before voters in a May 14 referendum. Gimenez has said the team would pay for the election.

Under the agreement, the county would increase its mainland hotel tax rate from 6 percent to 7 percent, then give the team 75 percent of the new revenue up to $7.5 million in the first year, the Herald reported. The cap would increase by 3 percent every year thereafter.

After 30 years, the team would refund between $110 million and $120 million to Miami-Dade, according to the Herald.

Braman Building 100,000 Sq. Foot Dealership On Biscayne Blvd

Quote:
The City has given the A-OK to auto sales magnet, political activist, and billionaire Norman Braman to build an almost 100,000 square foot auto showroom and seven story parking garage on the very primed and very valuable Biscayne Boulevard site of his huge, but mostly one-or-two story dealership according to the Miami Herald. A street-level showroom with large glass windows will be surmounted by the parking garage, sheathed in murals created by art students from the YoungArts Foundation, whose new campus is being designed by Frank Gehry for the historic Bacardi Building next door.

Super tall condo coming to Brickell

By Martha Brannigan

A New York developer who made headlines in Manhattan with plans to erect a super skyscraper is now planning to launch a very tall condominium on Brickell Avenue.

Kevin Maloney, founder and CEO of Property Markets Group, said the developer will start taking reservations next week for Echo Brickell, a luxury condominium at 1451 Brickell that will rise about 750 feet — or 60 stories — and include up to 250 units.

Maloney and Ryan Shear, managing partner of PMG in South Florida, held a focus group Thursday at International Sales Group, which will market the pre-construction project. They gathered some of Miami’s top real-estate brokers to sound out what the market wants in what would become the tallest residential building in Miami to date.

“The caché of this building is certainly the height and the view,” said Maloney, who separately expects to break ground in July on Echo Aventura, a 190-unit bayfront condo that launched sales last fall.

Uruguayan architect Carlos Ott is handling the conceptual design of the Echo Brickell building, which will feature larger units than typically seen on Brickell. Penthouses will likely span more than 7,000 square feet.
