Yes and no. Brickell, in a financial sense, could be seen as Miami's Canary Wharf. So yes. It is Miami's most important financial and banking area (and arguably one of the biggest in the Latin American sphere). But it's also a lot more residential than Canary Wharf so it's not exactly a staid, bland business district like parts of Canary.

Sears Wants to Replace Aventura Mall Store With 'Village'

Quote:
Sears has submitted plans to the City of Aventura to build itself a little village of retail, offices, and even a hotel where their store is currently located at Aventura Mall (hey, it'll be mixed use!). The current two-level Sears with its auto center and surface parking would be replaced by a smaller format, 20,000 square foot Sears within the 250,000 squee feet of retail coming to the 'village', as well as both "below grade and above grade parking structures". They're calling it the Esplanade at Aventura.

Eddie Lampert's Sears Holding was always a play on the land under all those failing stores so this is a huge first volley in capitalizing on their best locations.

Renderings Revealed of One Brickell, Now Minus Cesar Pelli

Quote:
Somebody went Downtown to pick up plans and renderings of the Related Group's upcoming One Brickell megaproject earlier today, then a few hours later they all appeared on The Next Miami, formerly known as exMiami. Surprisingly, although the project was originally announced during Art Basel Miami Beach last year, with starchitect Cesar Pelli's name attached, these designs are just by Arquitectonica. A quick phone call by yours truly to Carlos Rosso, President of Related's condo division, confirms that yes, they decided just to go with Arquitectonica in the end. Pelli was busy.

Anywho, the project will contain three towers, of 57, 77 and 82 stories, with a combination of of mostly residential and hotel, along with about 40,000 square feet of office space and 25,000 square feet of retail. Enzo Enea is the landscape architect.

Zaha Hadid's One Thousand Museum Breaks Ground

Quote:
One Thousand Museum, the tower designed by starchitect Zaha Hadid on Biscayne Boulevard in Downtown Miami, had its ground broken today by Zaha herself. There were black & white M&M's for snacking, Zaha was radiant, and dirt was ceremonially thrown.

Villa Magna awakens

Hollo Says Hello to New York Developer on Brickell Project

Quote:
Three developers. Two 60-story towers. One Villa Magna.

New York-based MG Properties has partnered with Tibor Hollo's Florida East Coast Realty in this new financial district development.

The mixed-use project, including residential units and a hotel, sits on a 2.5-acre waterfront site. Villa Magna would have 1.8 million square feet in two 60-story towers.

There are plans for this project from Hollo that date back to 2012: the residences will house 400 units, and a hotel will accommodate 180 to 200 suites. The residential towers will face the water and sit at either end of the property, with the hotel in the middle.

South Florida hits milestone with 300th proposed condo tower

Quote:
Current condominium construction outstripping pace of development between 2003 and 2010

December 09, 2014 02:08PM

From the South Florida website: South Florida hit a preconstruction milestone with the approval from Miami-Dade County’s Planning & Zoning Board of the 300th new condominium tower of the current real estate cycle.

From 2003 to 2010, the tri-county area saw the creation of fewer than 250 condo towers east of Interstate 95. The distinction of the 300th proposed tower goes to an unnamed development approved on Dec. 2 in North Bay Village. The 22-story mixed-use building will be located on the Kennedy Causeway and feature 721 units

Worldcenter megaproject set to start

Quote:
Faded concrete lots in Miami’s Park West have taken on a new look as a billion-dollar mega project prepares to start construction with the dawn of the new year.

Miami Worldcenter, a multi-use development promising to turn 27 mostly barren acres into 10 blocks of condos, stores, entertainment venues and more, is at the starting gate.

Developers have announced a start within the first quarter of 2015 and plan to begin vertical construction midyear. In recent days, they’ve installed site wraps and signage bearing Worldcenter’s new branding and graphic design.

A key component is a towering 1,800-room Marriott hotel tied to a multi-storied convention center at the site of the former Miami Arena.

Billed as downtown Miami’s largest private development ever, Worldcenter is ultimately destined to bring $2 billion in investment to the urban core, the developers say.

New Renders of the Estefan's Tower Show a Mod Ziggurat

Quote:
So it looks like Fernando Romero, the architect designing the LAAM, is also doing Gloria and Emilio Estefan's planned tower northwest-ish of the Arsht Center. The architect has some renderings of the place on his website that are a lot newer than the one basic rendering already out there, the one published in the Herald earlier this year. According to Romero's site, the tower is being called EE Miami (although that may be a working title), it will be extremely mixed use with hotel, retail, offices, apartments, restaurants, amenities, etc., and there will be a helicopter pad on top.

Boomerang-Shaped Residential Planned for Biscayne & 57th

Quote:
Developers Green Dragon Group are planning a boomerang-shaped mid-rise residential tower for NE 57th Street and Biscayne Boulevard, on the triangular site planned for the Kubik residential project in the last cycle. Called Fifty Seven, it's being designed by Sieger Suarez. The project appears to be about eight or nine stories in renderings (update: it's exactly eight stories according to the publicists), and will have only 84 residential units, starting at 2,000 square feet and going up to 4,700, with ground floor retail, an elevated pool deck, and the residential section wrapping around the rear edge of the site.

935 Foot World Trade Center Tower Plan Submitted for Biscayne Boulevard

Quote:
A group of developers has submitted plans to the City of Miami for a 77 story tower planned to be the World Trade Center of the Americas for Biscayne Boulevard in Downtown Miami, on the site of the Holiday Inn at 340 Biscayne Boulevard, reports The Next Miami. The tower, designed by Arquitectonica, will take up every inch of allowable development under the zoning code, be mixed use, with offices on levels 16 to 23, a 100 room hotel on floors 27 to 36, and residential from 37 on up to 76.

It looks as if the most bland and monolithic portion of the tower is facing the bay...

Also, those EE Miami renders make absolutely no sense, and the building's architecture sucks.

2500 Biscayne Tower Will Have Little Historic Facade Decoration

Quote:
Having received approval to demolish the majority of an historic Mediterranean Revival building on Biscayne Boulevard to use the rest basically as facade decor for retail, 2500 Biscayne Boulevard is expected to begin construction in early 2015. The 20 story building will have 156 rental apartments, and lots of amenities. Oh, and one Next Miami reader who must not be much of a preservationist calls it 'Swanky.'

This is What the Shore Club Could Look Like, Post Reno

Quote:
The Shore Club might look a little different (okay, more than a little) after its renovation and conversion into a condo and hotel by Brazilian designer Isay Weinfeld. A preliminary rendering obtained by Curbed Miami shows the hotel's tower transformed with the enclosure of its balconies and an exoskeletal box form with new balconies built over the outside.

Brickell City Centre's First Tower, the East Hotel, Tops Off

Quote:
Construction topped off at Brickell City Centre's first tower, the East Hotel, which is on the east side of the site (imagine if it had been on the south west corner. Oh the irony!) with the placement of the last piece of steel onto the hotel's 40th floor. The views are pretty spectacular, particularly at the top, where a restaurant with an expansive outdoor dining area is planned. Even though it is adjacent to several other buildings of equal or greater height, the tower also has serendipitously obstruction-free views of Biscayne Bay thanks partially to the shorter towers on Brickell Key, which was developed by City Centre's developer, Swire Properties, years ago.
