Yep, this is way cooler! (And it appears to conform with present zoning)

Related Reboots South Loop Condo Tower as “The Adler”

The condo building formerly known as 1600 Museum Park is now officially The Adler (1629 South Prairie Avenue), after an extensive renovation by friends-of-the-blog, Related Companies.

Perkins+Will have won the competition to design the Prentice hospital replacement for Northwestern Medical...with their somewhat 'blah' design. Thankfully, since NWM is now publicly on full-blast form the local neighborhood organization ('SOAR'), for their tepid finalist designs, perhaps the winning firm will tweak their design for something considerably more iconic.

Edit: Images were taken down from Northwestern's site, so I'm re-posting from the Architecture Chicago Blog:

That design is beautiful. Nice lines, curves and glass.

Nothing 'blah' about that Perkins + Will design if you ask me. It can only get even better!

Here are some clearer renderings, taken from Lynn Becker's blog (courtesy of the developer and architect). The building is now 600' tall.

On the boards:

Chicago Riverwalk Franklin Point

Quote:
The proposed redesign Chicago Riverfront development culminates to the south at Franklin Point, a series of high-rise mixed-use towers behind low-rise townhomes. Four townhome buildings and six high-rise condominiums are designed to directly relate to the surrounding urban fabric.

No additional word on a timeline, financing, etc. for this older proposal.

Looks great, but sadly that's a number of years old, and was (I'm almost positive) just a speculative development project, with little to no investment capital behind it. I think the firm still includes it, as most do with speculative projects, primarily in order to showcase their design expertise or philosophy (As a few of my former employers still do with their respective design projects ).

In reality, the land was recently purchased, or an agreement to purchase was enacted by a development partner of Jay-Z (name escapes me), with I believe a plan for two high-rise projects, possibly hotel and residential. I'll look for the article..

I knew it was old but it's been recently refreshed on the architect's website. Not sure if that means anything though, especially given a sale of the site. Would be cool.

It would be so awesome, that corner of the City, right by the Old Main post office really needs some design & density love

I have to do some more sleuthing because I can't seem to find the article online about the new owner/development team. If I recall correctly, new plans were going to be released in early 2014..definitely need to keep an eye out for this one..

..In the meantime, here is another proposal (purely speculative) for that same plot of land, by architect Michael Charter; a highrise made completely out of wood, and I think it's absolutely fantastic. If I had money, I would build this

Countdown to Teardown: 200 North Michigan About to Go Bye Bye

Quote:
A century ago, someone was very proud when they put up the five-story building commercial at 200 North Michigan Avenue. Soon, someone else will be proudly watching as it comes down.

This past Thursday, the Chicago Plan Commission gave the green light to a plan to replace the five-story concrete office building with a shiny new glass residential skyscraper. Designed by friends-of-the-blog, bKL Architecture, the new tower will rise 42 stories over North Michigan Avenue, with 402 residences above two stories of retail space and a parking garage. That’s three stories shorter than what the developers originally asked the city for back in July.

The city has not yet issued demolition permits for the building currently at this location, but expect them soon. Loop Spy Ryan tipped us off to a farewell sign posted in the window by employees of the Starbucks in the building. It’s one of the few businesses that haven’t moved out yet. The sign indicates that the Starbucks will close on December 29th, so demolition and site prep should begin shortly after since the owners want to start construction on the tower in the Spring.

The proposal still has to be approved by the full Chicago city council, but that is essentially a rubber-stamp process at this point.

I find it kind of strange how a university hospital has better architecture than most office and residential towers under construction/proposed...
