15 Story Studio Gang-Designed City Hyde Park Ready to Rise

Quote:
The ambitious residential and retail development known as City Hyde Park has been in the works for several years now, but the Studio Gang designed structure will soon rise at 5105 S Harper Avenue. Demolition of the old Village Center strip mall began late last year, and now the groundwork has been laid for the construction of the 500,000 square foot mixed-use development. Developers Antheus Capital and Silliman Group originally intended to have the project done by this year, however, City Hyde Park is now expected to be completed next year. The development received its foundation permit back in March, and the new construction permit, which allows for a 15 story structure, was just recently issued by the city last week.

Mystery Lender May Help Chicago Spire Avoid Bankruptcy

Quote:
Law360, New York (September 23, 2014, 7:05 PM ET)

-- Illinois-based real estate developer Atlas Apartment Holdings LLC may have found a lender to help with its $135 million plan to save the on-hold Chicago Spire from bankruptcy, according to court documents.

According to a confidential letter sent to Atlas in late August that was made publicly available Friday, the undisclosed party feels "highly confident" that it could arrange the loan needed for the $135 million plan.

“[Redacted] is highly confident that as sole lead arranger and sole bookrunner, underwriter or placement agent it could structure,...

A Ditch Called Wanda: Early Signs that Chicago’s Next Supertall Tower Isn’t Just a Paper Tiger

Quote:
When a massive Chinese conglomerate that most Americans have never heard of announced it was going to splash out almost a billion dollars to put up an 1,150-foot-tall tower in Lakeshore East, you could hear the critics scoffing from Berwyn to Beijing. We’ve seen lots of proposals on paper over the years for huge projects all around downtown Chicago, and very few of them have ever made it past the press release and a few sketches on paper. Well, scoff no more, because this paper tiger has teeth.

McHugh Construction has begun very early, very preliminary, embryonic work on the Wanda Tower. It’s recently become active in the space that was formerly the staging area for the first phase of the two-building GEMS Academy. The work appears to be a utility survey, which makes sense since you can’t build up until you get down, and get funky, with what’s underground. And Lakeshore East has some of the funkiest loam in Chicagoland.

Pilings from old piers, railroad ties, abandoned freight tunnels, golf balls— There are all sorts of things that could be down there. McHugh even had to hire a radiation specialist, ECS Midwest out of Buffalo Grove, to keep an eye out for invisible nastiness.

Northwestern to Break Ground on New Research Center in 2015

Quote:
Last night, reps from Northwestern University and architects Perkins+Will co-hosted a community meeting to unveil the updated design for the planned biomedical research center that will replace the old Bertrand Goldberg-designed Prentice Women's Hospital. The plan has been in the works for years now, and if everything moves forward without a hitch, Northwestern hopes to begin construction of the first phase of the enormous project early next year. Northwestern selected P+W last December to lead the design of the new project, however, some residents at last night's meeting weren't very supportive of the most recent design change.

O-hoy, Yet Another Skyscraper Inbound for Lakeshore East

Quote:
The Lakeshore East neighborhood between the Loop and the lake probably isn't one of the most well-known of Chicago's many self-contained communities, but for skyscraper-watchers it's been one of the most exciting few blocks in town. Already home to Studio Gang's famous Aqua tower with another Gang tower likely to soon join it, the planned development conceived as a neighborhood of skyscrapers looks to be gaining yet another. According to bid-monitoring services and also reported by the Chicago Architecture Blog, Magellan Development and McHugh construction are taking bids for an unspecified 60-story mixed use tower "located at the southwest corner of Lakeshore East Park," a description that could only apply to Lakeshore East's infamous "Site O," the narrow strip of undeveloped dirt along Columbus between the Blue Cross Blue Shield building and Aqua tower.

Im disappointed. Its a little bland but it looks like the attention to detail in the interior may elevate this building.

That's Michigan Plaza. Federal Plaza is further south and west of Michigan Avenue.

44,000 Square Foot Dine-In Movie Theater Coming to Block 37

Quote:
In addition to the 694 apartment units that are coming soon to Block 37, the downtown shopping center will also soon be receiving an 11-screen cinema as well. AMC has signed up to open the large 44,000 square foot cinema on the fourth floor of Block 37, which could help bring more people and their dollars to the upper levels of the underutilized shopping mall.

According to reports from the Tribune and Crain's, the new theater is expected to be open in early 2016.

Retail, Offices, Residences & Hotels Proposed for Old Cook County Hospital Site

Quote:
Last night the Cook County Bureau of Economic Development and the Chicago Architecture Foundation hosted a meeting that saw five different presentations for the future reuse of the old Cook County Hospital building and the surrounding 10 acre site it stands on. The five teams were made up of civic groups, developers, architects and academics. Lambda Alpha International had two teams present proposals, the Chicago Central Area Committee, Landmarks Illinois and the Metropolitan Planning Council (MPC) also presented their ideas. Architects included Perkins + Will, Fitzgerald Associates, Antunovich Associates and Brininstool + Lynch. Although the design and makeup of each proposal was different, most of them touched on the success of previous adaptive reuse projects and envisioned the old Cook County Hospital as the center of a new office, retail, residential and hospitality district.
