Why!? Do you know the district and the price level in this area? We are far away from the city-center. It's no a justification for the architecture, but in the context the loft conversion is better than what could be expected. I know it´s a matter of taste if the roof extension is classic or modern, but i cannot see the historical value of the two buildings to force a classic one (btw: at least the new roof has the shape of a mansard-roof) . Counterquestion: I know this example is extreme, but do you think the two buildings are "beautiful" only because they are old!? Would it be much better without the extension?

In my opinion its pointless to post only the best projects out of the most beautiful districts all the time. On the other hand is good to see that the old buildings are architecturally flexible and timeless, so they can also take the modern style. Most of the time the renovation of the building's are financed by an attic conversion. The upper apartments have to be expensive to cover the reconstruction costs. Nowadays people want large windows and lots of glass for example.

I didn't say that I liked the building either, and I'd guessed that it's far from the city-centre because of the surrounding buildings. I just didn't like it so I posted a bit of an exaggeration of a response.

This is absolutely disgusting! D: How can Vienna do that to it's beautiful heritage? Don't you have Denkmalschutz over there?

While I do agree that a fair share of rooftop extensions in Vienna is objectionable and should definitely be avoided in certain zones at least, I still think you spread it on thick.
I'd say I'm relatively conservative when it comes to this matter, yet I don't find the two examples on the current page to be that critical. The older buildings were rather unsignificant and plain, there are hundreds alike all around the city.
The area around Rasumofskygasse is built-up practically exclusively of revenue houses (Zinshäuser) from the Gründerzeit period - it looks good and orderly, but the excessive uniformity also makes it tedious and forgettable. It somehow lacks traces of an organic growth, similarly to other or completely newly developed areas where all the buildings are of one and the same style. Some diversity in form of minor/nondisruptive modern upgrades doesn't hurt. In the proximity there are a few more houses being a storey or two lower than their neighbours that could use an upward extention.
