Honestly all of those rooftop extensions look awful, why would someone ruin such beautiful and genuine roofs for the sake of adding just another floor that seems to disrespect the rest of the original building. Truly awful.

The rooftop extensions looks very stylish. The architecture of the most projects of vienna looks awful. they looks like socialism.

I like most of these rooftop extensions, but the billboard on that one is absolutely hideous!

Well, what else could he/she share, I mean this thread is filled with dreadful rooftop extensions, it seems those are the only 'projects' occurring in this city.

Does it seem like that? They surely aren't the only projects, but interesting to see how people feel about the projects.
I don't think many cities actually build that many flats as Vienna does. The quantity shouldn't be questioned, the quality however may be disputed.

@ Architecture lover

I think it is a matter of taste whether you like modern roof constructions on historic buildings or not. It's okay if you don´t like the architectural mix, but viewed in isolation they are of high quality (especially if you compare them with other new residential buildings in our city). At this point, you have to understand the development in Vienna. Compared to other cities (for example Berlin) we dont have the space to develope new residental buildings in central areas. The city is growing rapidly (+40.000 last year) and there is a big demand for high-end flats. The customers of this segment like a lot of glass and striking modern architecture, so historic constructions are not an option. It seems like we build all the modern residential architecture which everybody likes - but on a different place - on our roofs. I think it is better than tear down the historic buildings to create new space. If you take a look inside the apartments, you will understand their popularity. And the renovation of an old building does not only involve the roof. They really do a good job. Take a look at the pictures in post #694 or #695. Okay, you dont like the extension – thats fine! And the restoration of the units and the facade, the new ground floor with shops, the patio with new balconies!? The new patio is of high-quality (most of the time they are really dark/ugly before the renovation)! I think its unfair to hate the whole project because of a modern roof. You should also pay attention to the (expensive) details. They are financed by the "ugly" new roof and the modern flats.

And there are actually a lot of different ongoing projects.
The rare amount of building plots will be a great advantage for upcoming high-rise projects. In addition to the existing skyline they will build 30 to 40 new residential towers (in the segment between 60 and 150m).

Thank you for the precise explanation. I do understand the need of the people to live in something modern/contemporary, since I am one of those people who also prefer to live in something more fit-able for its time of construction, rather than living in a museum. However I am still not sure if mixing those modern rooftop flats with the historical architecture beneath is the best solution, to me it all seems like serving tuna with whipped cream. But then again I do understand that the costumers demand is what makes the market, so I suppose, investors have to take care of them and their needs.

To me it would be more ideal if the rooftop extensions were more in line with the character of the rest of the building instead of having a modern exterior but I guess that would be very expensive. I can understand why buyers are looking for at least a modern interior since I myself wouldn't like living in an old building despite them being gorgeous on the outside. It is what it is, I guess

I LOVE that ground floor renovation on Servitengasse

VIENNA | Projects & Construction

I do agree though that some (or most of the rooftop extensions on here at least) do not take care of the building underneath and are designed to break with the classical structures. This might have been a cool thing once or twice but somehow it became the new standard of rooftop extensions. I am not opposed to them as i do see the advantages for the old buildings and frankly, you can't see most of them from the streetlevel. But I'd rather have the rooftop extension in a style more suitable for the buildings underneath.
