Dubai fully committed to stage exceptional Expo 2020

25 February 2013

DUBAI - Signalling its tall ambitions at the foot of the world’s tallest tower, the country said it plans to host the best ever World Expo if Dubai is chosen in 2020.

We will spare no effort to make it truly global and inspirational for generations to remember, said Shaikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates airlines and Group. Shaikh Ahmed is also the Chairman of the Higher Committee for Hosting the Expo.

“Dubai is fully committed to delivering an exceptional World Expo in 2020 — an Expo that the Bureau International des Expositions will be proud of and an Expo that will truly be for the world. Our goal is to present the best Expo in its 150 year history,” he said on Monday evening with the towering Burj Khalifa in the backdrop.

......

The reception was attended by BIE members, officials from DP World, Dubai Airports, Emirates, Emirates NBD, etisalat and Jumeirah Group. Leading lights of the business community also attended in support of the country’s bid.

The iconic Dubai Fountain later poured forth to the strains of Czech composer Antonin Dvoøak’s Symphony from the New World — the anthem of the BIE. It was followed by the story of the UAE as told by Shayma Al Mughairy, a 17-year-old sand artist.

The BIE Executive Committee is assessing the UAE’s 2020 bid which falls on the eve of the country’s Golden Jubilee. The site of the proposed Expo is Dubai Trade Centre in Jebel Ali.

So, if Dubai wins, where will be the pavilion? Deira? Jebel Ali?

Dubai says expo would give €28bn boost

Feb 28 2013

Thursday, Feb 28, 2013
Dubai expects a €28bn boost to its economy if it is successful in its bid to stage the World Expo 2020, the emirate announced on Thursday.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chairman of Dubai's bid committee, said the emirate would create 277,000 jobs in the run-up to the event, which is expected to attract 25m visitors. Every Expo job is expected to generate another 50 jobs across the Middle East, north Africa and South Asia.

"It would leave a powerful legacy of new international partnership for a generation to come in the UAE and the wider region beyond," said Sheikh Ahmed, who also runs the government's fast-growing Emirates airline.

.......

The Bureau International des Expositions, the governing body, has this week carried out a four-day inquiry mission to assess Dubai's ability to host the exhibition. The event is held every five years and consists of national pavilions and cultural events exploring global development themes. The five candidate cities - which also include Izmir, Turkey; Sao Paulo, Brazil; Yekaterinburg, Russia; and Ayutthaya, Thailand - will find out in June if their bids have been deemed feasible.

UAE Expo 2020 bid made a great impression, say inspectors

Colin Simpson

Feb 28, 2013 Updated Feb 28, 2013 11.09pm

DUBAI // The delegates who assessed the UAE’s bid to host Expo 2020 this week gained a very positive impression on their visit, their secretary general said yesterday.

Vicente Loscertales was speaking as the team from the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), which supervises world expos, completed its four-day enquiry mission to determine the feasibility of the bid.

“We have had a wonderful visit with well-organised meetings and serious reports and therefore our impression is good,” Mr Loscertales said.

But he made it clear his comments were not intended to prejudge the result of the mission or reveal what it would recommend.

“If you want a general impression which comes not from a professional enquiry mission but out of the heart, then out of the heart it is very positive,” Mr Loscertales said.

“The mission will now examine all the documents and answers and produce its report.”

The BIE enquiry mission in Thailand

The visit to Thailand by the BIE Enquiry Mission took place from 28 January to 1 February with the aim of evaluating the feasibility of Expo-2020 Ayutthaya’s project.

The program of the BIE delegates’ team leaded by the Chairman of the Executive Committee Mr Steen Christensen included meetings with senior government officials, representatives of the opposition party, the business sector, and civil society groups. In order to respond to the delegation’s questions related to 14 issues identified in Thailand’s Preliminary Enquiry Dossier 5 sessions with the experts of Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), responsible for the candidacy of Ayutthaya, were organized.

On of the key points of the agenda was the meeting with the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand Ms Yingluck Shinawatra.
