Thailand Voices "New Global Dialogue" through World Expo 2020 Ayutthaya at 151st BIE General Assembly in Paris

BANGKOK, June 29, 2012 -- Thailand delivered its third update on preparations to submit Thailand's bid to host the World Expo 2020 Ayutthaya the 151st General Assembly of the Bureau of International Expositions (Bureau International des Expositions: BIE) in Paris during last 11-12 June among 157 member countries.

Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister, Mr. Chumpol SILAPA-ARCHA, led a delegation of Royal Thai Government representing the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (Public Organisation) or TCEB, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Commerce, and the Tourism Authority of Thailand, to assure confidence among member countries. The Royal Thai government has highlighted its abundant support by granting Thailand's bid as a priority under the 'National Agenda', and fast-tracking construction of the largest flood control scheme in Thailand.

Mr. Chumpol SILAPA-ARCHA, Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister, disclosed that, "Thailand is now stepping ahead to lead other candidate cities. The National Bidding Committee was set up. The key agencies responsible for preparing our bid are Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I believe we have succeeded in building confidence among BIE's 157 member countries. This is our third update to BIE on the status of Thailand's bid preparations, and stressed the significance of the government's announcement incorporating the project as part of the National Agenda."

Thailand's report also emphasised the superb transportation network, world-class international airport, and Thailand's strategic location as the gateway to Asia. The Royal Thai Government has confirmed their strong commitment to complete the country's largest flood control system, which will bring immense benefits to the city and province of Ayutthaya, which has been nominated as the location for hosting World Expo 2020.

Mr. Varawut SILAPA-ARCHA, Advisor to the Board of Director of the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau, added that, "Thailand's plan to establish three levels of local participation in the project: firstly at local level, to maximise engagement of the population of Ayutthaya Province; at the national level the bid was promoted at the BOI Fair earlier this year, attended by more than two million Thais, as well as through a national campaign. At the international level, a major communication campaign has been implemented and scheduled to be unleashed worldwide very soon."

During the assembly, Thailand has conveyed some examples of topics that might be utilised by member countries as themes for their own pavilions, under the Expo's main theme "Redefine Globalisation - Balanced Life, Sustainable Living". With this outstanding theme, it delivers the new global dialogue. Member countries are liberated to adopt, interpret and define these topics in accordance with their own individual cultural and local perspective. The sub-themes are also introduced which are as follows:
- Revive Local Wisdoms for Human Well Being: including exercise and meditation, herbs and organic foods, traditional cultures and architecture,
- Reunite Connections for Seamless Harmony: transport innovations, communication technologies, and social cohesion;
- Rethink Creativity for Utmost Happiness: Creative arts, alternative energy, natural resource management, and eco-tourism;
- Reform Life's Values for Global Solidarity: Building cooperation without discrimination, unconditional giving, and eliminating social inequality.

Thailand is elaborated in detail of the completed Ayutthaya Bid Book. This requires presentation of project plans for every key component, including financial plan, national infrastructure development programme, master plan and designs, and communications. Ayutthaya Bid Book is scheduled to be submitted to BIE by December 2012

In conclusion, Mr. Chumpol said, "Thailand will present the status of its bid to BIE another two times - in November 2012 and in June 2013. In addition, in January 2013, BIE will also schedule their official visit to Thailand to inspect the site and country's readiness and potential."

Apart from this, Thailand's participation at Expo 2012 at Yeosu, Korea was widely acclaimed. The Thai Pavilion has so far attracted more than 350,000 people in the first month since opening, and has proved one of the event's most popular pavilions.

To choose an Expo is need to know about projects and especially what will be the legacy? I think Dubai being a city that has already developed and is very complete, not lacking anything else, has contributed nearly with the main legacies that could leave to the world and your city. So I still think that Dubai can expect more perfectly. Dubai does not need of Expo. Dubai is an World Expo already have years, even without being. The Turkey has to decide whether to want Expo, Euro or Olympics, or they end up getting nothing. I'd rather focus on Turkey at the Olympics and I hope that happen there. As for Ekaterinburg can also expect more, already that in 2015 will be in Europe. And 2010 was in Asia. Europe're voting in Ekaterinburg. Europe has hosted thousands of Expo. Enough! The crisis will not end up in Europe or relieve Solely due to an Expo in Russia. Not same! Forget it! The Crisis Is Focused on the European Countries with crisis and that to thrive have to review the internal problems. In addition to Russia already has several events such as Brazil, but Sao Paulo is a very large, diverse, powerfull, very cultural and it still needs to develop more and more to boost their investments in other regions of the city that without doubt is most needy than other cities all competitors.

We have to push the boundaries. It is absurd that Latin America and particularly Sao Paulo, a city that is home to almost all cultures of the world and has contributed much for the global community, never even hosted an Expo. Never! That still does not enter in the my head. Sao Paulo is one of three major world financial centers and a major business centers, events and conventions in the world.

Sao Paulo is an international city, in the broad sense of the word in various branches. In sport, gastronomy, fashion, music, cultural and sexual diversity, industrial and various other things.

I think that Africa needs to receive an Expo too, but they need to prepare more and offer a bid.

So, summing up in one sentence: it is either Ayutthaya or Sao Paulo for the Expo 2020. One of the two for me would be more valid and wonderful than the others, especially in relation to local and global heritage - cultural, of legacy. But now the race will depend on the projects and how they are funded and will leave their mark. Both Ayutthaya as Sao Paulo have good projects and large, ambitious and even some that are already to start the works. Some have already begun and are well advanced.

In Sao Paulo you will be able to go to Rio of High Speed Train in just one hour. And compared to other Brazilian cities and in Latin America that are wonderful 2-5 hours. Among many other works and projects that are underway.

It may be that not win Ayutthaya or Sao Paulo for the 2020 Expo. But I think so and I think the world would benefit more with this choice.

Sao Paulo has a mix of architecture and engineering. One of the main are the churches of all styles and religions. A multitude of things. Sao Paulo is superlative. The city has a very large range in all directions. The city has the largest urban conurbation 2nd in the world, which means that it covers the metropolitan area as well as all the nearby cities of Sao Paulo. The first on the list if I remember correctly is Tokyo.

We all know what the cities look like. Please stop spamming the thread with random city photographs and stick to genuine news/discussions on the 2020 bids.

The projects have not yet been concluded. We are waiting. We know of the proposals but it still lacks many details. So what's left for now is to know more the cities competing.

Sao Paulo is a modernist city, but Dubai is a city of the future, beyond 2020, 2025, 2030 ... Even that the city stay most advanced yet in the future. I think 2020 has yet to be a city of the present, we must be cautious because the world has more than four distinct realities. So there has to be gradual for the world participate more effectively and monitor the changes and progress. All countries that are part of BIE have to enjoy it, and take advantage of some projects to their country of origin, especially of sustainable manner. That's exactly what I think of these times.
