Manuel Silvério visits Korean Olympic Committee

On 28 July at the Korean Olympic Committee (KOC) headquarters located at Seoul Olympic Park, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Macao 4th East Asian Games Organising Committee (MEAGOC) Manuel Silvério visited the new KOC president Kim Jung Kil, and Secretary-General Dr. Kim Sang Woo. Both parties exchanged their opinions on the arrangement of KOC delegation to the 4th East Asian Games. The Korean Olympic Committee is the fifth NOC Manuel Silvério visited after its counterparts of China, Mongolia, Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and Hong Kong, China.

In his presentation, Manuel Silvério introduced the preparations in all aspects of the Games and appreciated the active participations of NOCs in the group events which entry had already closed a few days ago.

"MEAGOC is at our best in welcoming the KOC sport delegations, as well as from others NOC," said Manuel Silvério, who also suggested KOC to consider charter flight to Macau in order to ease athletes' weariness by the journey. In this aspect, MEAGOC is pleased to provide any necessary assistance.

President Kim Jung Kil and Secretary-General Kim Sang Woo enquired about the arrangement on competition, accommodation, security, entry and the arrival of their cultural performance group.

"KOC would send a big sport delegation of 700 members, including top athletes of Korea, to compete in the events of the 4th East Asian Games. In addition, we are considering joining the women dragon boat event. We will confirm KOC Chef-de-Mission next week, who will attend the Chef-de-mission meeting in Macau in the end of August. The charter flight is a good idea and I hope MEAGOC will provide us with further details."

Kim Jung Kil also mentioned that KOC new cabinet is working hard to bid for the hosting of the Asian Games, the IAAF World Championships and the Winter Olympic Games.

After his trip in Korea, Manuel Silvério flew to Japan immediately to visit the president of Japanese Olympic Committee on 29 July.

Chairman of the Board of Directors of Macau 4th East Asian Games Organising Committee Manuel Silvério visited the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) at its headquarters of Tokyo on 29 July immediately following his visit to the Korean Olympic Committee. JOC is the sixth NOC meeting Manuel Silvério after its counterparts of China, Mongolia, Democratic People¡¦s Republic of Korea (DPR Korea), Hong Kong China and South Korea.

President of JOC and Chairman of Asian Games Coordination Committee of Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) Tsunekatsu Takeda, as well as JOC Head of International Affairs Department Yasuhiro Nakamori received Manuel Silvério warmly. Both parties discussed on the arrangements for the JOC sport delegation in the 4th East Asian Games.

Manuel Silvério introduced the various aspects in preparation for the Games, in particular, the inauguration of the international standard football field in Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) in September. He stressed that the MUST football field would provide "another ideal training ground for football teams to ensure their utmost performances."

In the meeting, Tsunekatsu Takeda enquired about the entry, competition, hospitality and cultural events.

"JOC would coordinate all local Japanese sport federations to organize a large sport delegation of top athletes to participate in 4th East Asian Games. However, JOC would not send athletes to compete in the women dragon boat event in this upcoming East Asian Games."

Tsunekatsu Takeda also announced that a traditional performance group will participate in the Opening and the Closing Ceremonies. For the time being, China, Japan, South Korea and North Korea have confirmed their participations in all the group events of the Games, except that DPR Korea would excuse itself from the dragon boat.

Palm gambles on Macau

Going to the 2005 East Asian Games in October? You can now bring along your Palm Treo 650 smartphone.

That's because Palm announced this week that it has tested and certified its multi-function handheld with CTM, one of the largest telecom service providers in the host city of Macau. CTM runs a GSM/GPRS network there.

Ticket sales for the 2005 East Asian Games went on sale today. Some 15,817 seats are available in the Opening Ceremony, and 6,808 seats in the Closing Ceremony.

Athletes participate in several events like swimming, basketball, bowling, boxing, football, gymnastics, handball, judo, soft tennis, taekwondo, volleyball, weightlifting, wrestling and wushu (martial arts).

Located in the South China sea on three connected islands, Macau was the first European settlement in the Far East and supports a pretty well-to-do economy. Macau used to be known for its textile industry but in 2002, the region saw a surge in visitors from China and a hike in taxes on gambling profits, which generated about 70 percent of government revenue.

The three companies awarded gambling licenses have pledged to invest $2.2 billion in the territory, which will boost GDP growth.
