Pumping of water from Osmansagar begins In view of the depleting levels, the Water Board installed a pump at Osmansagar reservoir on Sunday. The 50 hp pump was commissioned last night as the water level fell to 1771.5 feet. Water can be drawn through pumping till the level goes down to 1765 feet. The Board is in the process of acquiring three more pumps of 50 hp capacity to be kept as standby. Consequently the drawl from Osmansagar fell to 14 mgd as against 23 mgd. “As of now there is no need for pumping at Himayatsagar. We can continue without pumping for another month”, said D. Sunder Ram Reddy, in-charge Director (Technical), HMWSSB. He said as a result of short supply from Osmansagar, needs of the areas served by it is being met by Krishna water. A quantum of 9 mgd is being diverted from Krishna drinking water project. Meanwhile, authorities are keeping a close watch on the quality of drinking water in Osmansagar. So far the quality is okay and there is no cause for worry, officials said. |

Pipelines at Nagole metro rail depot set to be shifted
HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) will start shifting water pipelines at the Nagole metro rail depot soon. The Water Board has completed the tender process recently and the work to shift the lines will commence in a day or two. This is the first major work being taken up by the Water Board on the 27.51km metro corridor-III between Nagole and Shilparamam. L&T Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (L&THMRL) has started construction of piers between Nagole and Mettuguda in the first phase. According to the Water Board officials, the distribution network pertaining to ring main-I of the Krishna drinking water supply project phase-I was located near the depot. "We will invite tenders in a phased manner for shifting both water and sewer lines. In the first phase, we had invited tenders for shifting pipelines near the Nagole depot and finalised them recently. The Board will spend Rs 75 lakh and the work will start in a couple of days," HMWS&SB director-technical (In-charge) D Sundar Rami Reddy said. During the shifting period, residents of Uppal, Nagole, Habsiguda, Tarnaka and Lalaguda might face water problems for three weeks. In the interim, the Water Board would make alternative arrangements, including sending water tankers to the areas likely to be affected, the official said. The HMRL authorities had submitted sketches pertaining to the metro rail. "We found that water pipelines near National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) and a multi-national company (MNC) near Habsiguda would be affected. It is a tough task as the major pipeline of the Krishna project has to be shifted," the official added. After careful examination and joint inspection, the Water Board has suggested to the HMRL authorities to change the alignment of the metro rail, if possible, near NGRI. |

Secunderabad Cantonment Board fixes meters to measure supplies by Water Board
HYDERABAD: The Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) on Wednesday fixed water meters to its pump houses to check the quantity of water being supplied by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB). The Water Board claims it has been supplying 3.80 million gallons a day (MGD) of water to the SCB. "So far, we did not have any device to gauge the quantity of water supplied. The SCB has been supplying water to Cantonment area through five pump houses - Mahendra Hills, Gunrock, Hasmathpet, Railway Colony, Balamrai. Now, we will measure quantity of water being supplied to these pump houses," SCB superintendent, water works, M Raj Kumar told TOI. On Wednesday, the SCB purchased Rs 16 lakh worth water meters and fixed them at the five pump houses. "With this, we will know the quantity of water supplied by the Water Board in the form of an SMS. The same alert will also be sent to the HMWS&SB officials. We will also maintain water meter readings daily," the official said. |

This project along with the Godavari water project will hopefully solve the city's water problem.
http://ibnlive.in.com/news/funds-oka...75-60-121.html Funds okayed for Krishna Scheme-3 HYDERABAD: Chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Saturday approved the Hyderabad Metrpolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board’s proposal for a HUDCO loan of Rs 1,670 crore for taking up the Krishna Phase III Project to meet the water needs of the GHMC area. The chief minister took the decision at a review meeting held at the Secretariat with ministers and senior officials. He asked the Board to complete the Krishna Phase-III project at any cost by December 2013. The phase-III will help in drawing 90 mgd of water per day from Akkampally reservoir. Already city is drawing 180 MGD of water from Krishna Phase I and II. As of now, the city is experiencing a shortfall of over 100 MGD of water. The situation is worse on the city outskirts where water is supplied once in four days or twice a week. The officials told the chief minister that reliability of existing sources is diminishing year by year. The Osmansagar and Himayatsagar sources are drying up regularly and dwindling inflows to Singur and Manjeera sources thus creating problems on its dependability. The total installed capacity of existing sources is about 340 mgd. Based on the source dependability analysis, the available net quantity of water would be in the order of 271.50 mgd.The officials told the chief minister that there was an immediate need to augment water supply from Krishna Phase-III to meet the immediate deficit.Responding to the proposal, Kiran Kumar Reddy immediately approved the proposal of HUDCO loan of Rs 1,670 crore towards the project. The main components of the project are construction of water treatment plant (WTP) of 90 mgd capacity, construction of clear water reservoirs, balancing reservoirs of 117 ML capacity to facilitate intermediate pumping, construction of pump houses and erection of pumping equipment, laying of clear water transmission mains of 113.5 km length, laying of distribution trunk mains of 62 km length. |

Housing and Urban Development Corporation prefers land as collateral, not sewerage treatment plants
HYDERABAD: With the Housing and Urban Development Corporation (Hudco) refusing to accept assets such as sewerage treatment plants (STPs) and reservoirs as collateral, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) is making efforts to identify open land for the Rs 1,000 crore loan for the Godavari drinking water supply project ( Maulana Abul Kalam Srujala Sravanthi). Hudco agreed to sanction the loan when the Water Board approached it last year but wanted open land as collateral. "In a letter to the municipal administration and urban development (MA&UD) department, the Hudco said it prefers open land as collateral to infrastructural assets like STPs and reservoirs," a senior Water Board official told TOI. The Water Board has short-listed 500 acres of open land located in the vicinity of STPs and reservoirs in the city. The land has been identified at five areas -- Sahebnagar, Gungal, Hydernagar, Peddapur and Singaapur -- in and around the city. The Water Board has already submitted a detailed project report (DPR) of the Krishna phase-III to the government and it may launch it shortly. In fact, Hudco, in principle, agreed to give a loan of Rs 1,600 crore for the Krishna phase-III. "Though the Krishna water project is also important for us, we are giving priority to complete the Godavari drinking water project and aim to commission it by 2013," the official added. |

Joint ventures to woo contractors
With few contractors coming forward to take up the rural water supply and sanitation works on tender basis, the state government has mooted selective joint ventures. The government plans to take up about works worth about Rs 2,000 crore per annum for next one decade and going by the present pace of works and the lukewarm response from contractors, the goal cannot be achieved. On a trial basis, the panchayat raj and rural development department (RWS-1) has mooted joint ventures and the same has been approved by the government in modification of present tender system. The special officer and engineer-in-chief, RWS & S department, Hyderabad has stated that for there were a limited number of agencies for the works since several years and the number of contractors diminishing day by day. On the other hand, the quantum of work was growing multi-fold even as the financial capabilities of the existing agencies remain limited. Besides, some projects have been delayed due to clearance from railways, R and D, forest, irrigation and other departments. He said that there was a need for favourable tenders in order to save on the budget and time in extending the much-needed service delivery in rural areas. The official also informed the government that due to present tender conditions, new agencies were unable to participate in RWS&S works. “The work load is also going to be increased substantially during 2012-13 and there is need of grounding projects worth about Rs 2,000 crore per annum for the next ten years, saturating coverage in rural areas. The joint ventures would help the department to attract more number of agencies, leading to healthy competition,” said panchayat raj and rural development department secretary Vikas Raj. |

Forest land cleared for drinking water project
HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) has overcome the first hurdle towards acquiring forest land for the proposed Godavari drinking water supply project (Maulana Abul Kalam Hyderabad Srujala Sravanthi Scheme). A stretch under the supervision of roads and buildings (R&B) department in Karimnagar district's Ramagundam would now be utilised for the laying of a pipeline for the proposed project. The Water Board wants 300 acres of forest land spread over Karimnagar, Medak and Rangareddy districts. "For laying of the pipeline, we have identified a nine-km stretch of road laid five decades ago by R&B department to link Anthargaon and Basanthnagar, two hamlets in Ramagundam area. The road fell into disuse as the R&B department opened an alternative route," a top HMWS&SB official told TOI. Before obtaining clearance, Water Board officials held discussions with their counterparts from forest and R&B departments. Subsequently, they jointly inspected the stretch on July 3. Finally, R&B department officials in Karimnagar came forward to allot the stretch to Water Board with the consent of the forest department, the official added. "This is a major achievement as we have received clearance for forest land in Karimnagar. Once R&B hands over the land, the digging would start. We have paid Rs 6.60 lakh to R&B as compensation for the road. We will lay a new road after the pipeline is in place," the official said. Efforts are on to acquire forest land in Medak and Rangareddy districts as well, the official revealed. |

Secunderabad Cantonment Board to promote rainwater harvesting
HYDERABAD: The Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) will follow in the footsteps of Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) and construct rainwater harvesting (RWH) structures in its jurisdiction. Though the RWH structures should have been in place before the arrival of monsoon, the SCB officials claim it is never too late to start a good initiative. "We have experienced severe water crisis this summer. The HMWS&SB could not supply the assured quantity of water to us. Adding to the problem, groundwater in the Cantonment area also got depleted. Of 200 borewells in the Cantonment area, 150 have dried up completely," an SCB water works official told TOI. "In view of the recent experience, we felt the need for construction of rainwater harvesting structures. Initially, we will educate and encourage citizens to construct RWH structures by distributing pamphlets containing information on how to build them," the official added. Initially, the SCB would spread awareness about the concept in 100 residential colonies in Mahendra Hills, Trimulgherry, Bowenpally, Bolarum and Marredpally. "We will give technical assistance to construct RWHs. The residential association has to bear all the expenditure for construction of RHW on their premises," added. A proposal would also be moved to make RWH structures mandatory either at the time of new water connection or sanctioning building plan. The proposal would be tabled before the next Cantonment Board meeting to be held shortly, the official said. |
