But in the end it didn't - all transportation has to be paid for, by someone, when it's free it's still the taxpayer funding it. So if "free transportation" is implemented, we can only hope it burdens the rich more than the poor. The problem in Brazil is that we have a ceiling of 26% income tax, no matter how rich you are, and at around 2500USD/month you are already at the maximum.

But I don't see people fighting for income tax increases for the rich (by rich I mean people making over, say, 10,000USD/month).

the "free PT" is only free for registered citizens of Tallinn and students, all the rest must pay higher prices than before

Brazil's corruption and income inequality is on another stratosphere in comparison to Estonia. You are comparing one of the most corrupt and unequal (developing) countries in the world to one of the most equal and significantly less corrupt (one of the least corrupt from the former eastern block, and I originate from it). These protests are less so about transit fares and more so about the utterly broken and corrupt society and government. I just hope all of this results in at least a step forward because at this point every step counts given the hole Brazil is in right now. My two cents/

Another difference we cannot neglect is that Tallinn is a tiny little toy of a city compared to Sao Paulo (450,000 inhabitants versus 20 million).

A exemplo das demais linhas, a Linha 9-Esmeralda está sendo modernizada. Estão sendo trocados os sistemas de sinalização, telecomunicações, energia, rede aérea e via permanente [trilhos]. Também está em andamento o processo de licitação para execução das obras da Extensão da Linha 9-Esmeralda entre Grajaú e Varginha. Serão mais 4,5 km de linha alcançando o extremo sul da capital, com duas novas estações: Mendes e Varginha.

Atualmente, a linha atende de Osasco até Grajaú, transportando a média diária de 570 mil usuários [dia útil].
