The most popular way to arrive in São Paulo city is by highway coach. Because São Paulo don't have a intercity railway network (São Paulo State Goivernment has plans to build a Intercity Railway system with Pendolino-style trains), thousand of coaches arrives in the city every day carriyng commuters, travelers and migrants.

The first coach station was inaugurated in 1962. Owned by a private company, Júlio Prestes Coach Station was located in the Downtown, in the front of Júlio Prestes Railway Station. Some years after the inauguration, this station was overcrowded. Buses took up to an hour to leave the terminal.

In 1975, State Government decided to build new coach stations for São Paulo city, near the highways and integrated with the new subway system. The first state-owned Coach Station was inaugurated in 1977: Jabaquara Coach Station.

Nowadays, Jabaquara Coach Station receives buses from coastal cities such as Santos, São Vicente, Itanhaém and Guarujá. It is integrated with Jabaquara Subway Station and is located near Congonhas Airport.

In 1982, Júlio Prestes Coach Station ceased its operations and the building was demolished in 2010. In the same year, State Government inaugurated the Tietê Coach Station, the second biggest coach station of the world. With 90 platforms and integrated with Portuguesa-Tietê Subway Station, Tietê Coach Station receives commuter buses, interstates buses and some international buses (to Buenos Aires, Lima of Peru, Santiago of Chile, Montevideo and Asuncion). Express buses to Rio de Janeiro leaves Tietê Coach Station every 30 minutes.

In 1989, the third coach staion was inaugurated: Barra Funda Intermodal Station. Unlike Tietê and Jabaquara Stations, Barra Funda Station has conection with commuter rail, subway and city buses. Until 1999, intercity trains left Barra Funda Intermodal Station. Nowadays, this coach station recieves some commuter buses, interstates buses and international buses from Bolivia.

During some years, State Government operated a provisional Coach Station in the São Paulo Downtown: Bresser Coach Station. It recieved buses from Belo Horizonte and Minas Gerais State. Because ampliation of Tietê Coach Station, this station ceased its operations in 2003. Nowadays, it is a Police Station.
