Its all over the news here. The section on fire is used as a museum (Portuguese language museum).

This is the second major fire the station suffered in its history, the first being in 1946. The second floor on fire now was actually added to the station after the 1946 fire.

The government of the state of São Paulo suspends work in large portion of monorail line 17 due to lack of funds. It claims works will restart once the economy recovers. The project is already grossly over budget.

Just kidding, this is a fake image, an unknown monorail added to the real skyline of Sao Paulo in 1950.

I've heard it's the busiest system in the world. Not sure. Those numbers refer to the municipality only, not for the metro area.

I thought the same when I saw the numbers you posted on Detroit (88,000).

If history had followed a different path, and Detroit had grown at least at the national average, they would have 10 million people in their CSA and their urban area would probably be denser, as the city proper. Their ridership would be tens of times higher in this scenario.

Not as much. The Sao Paulo metro and commuter rail system is dramatically underdeveloped for the size of the city. It should be more than just 8 million/day.

For instance, when metro line 5-purple opens, the numbers will increase a lot, as that line is crucial to communicate the southern districts to the city centre.

In fact, I'm a bit worried for Santo Amaro station, which can become an even worse bottleneck than Pinheiros, and that's saying something.

I always complain about this. I post interesting threads on City Talk/Urban Issues and they remain abandoned on the first page for an entire month, with few or no replies at all.

It's not that low (8 million, Metrô+CPTM). I just read Shanghai's subway is on 10 million. Shanghai has 24 million people while São Paulo metro area + Jundiaí region is on 22 million. And car fleet is much bigger in São Paulo than in Shanghai.

It's a much smaller station, by the way. It already feels pretty bad when you're transferring from line 5 to 9 (and vice versa).

Santo Amaro will relieve Pinheiros a little, but will become indeed a problematic bottleneck when the rest of Line 5 opens. They would have to add new staircases.
