When the construction of subway started, were the previous tram tracks (closed in sixties) discovered under the road surface in the time of digging?

Two months ago, the subway workers had stumbled on the old streetcar tracks that connected the region to the Cathedral of Santo Amaro, a few yards from where the vessels have now been found.

The rails were buried just 20 inches from where the asphalt is today, beside the ancient cobblestone pavement from the road. The line ran between 1913 and 1968 and was the last of St. Paul to stop operating.

Sao paulo once had a large tram network, but completely closed in sixties.
