I figured it was more similar to the X'trapolis trains in Melbourne and Valparaise. But I can see the resemblance to NYC's Alstoms as well.

Yes its an Alstom train (but made in Brazil) so it is vaguely similar to the NY trains, although more colorful

The steel box of those cars have been made in Alstom's Lapa plant, in São Paulo, Brazil. Same plants where these ones were made:

Neat, I didn't know that!

A truly sturdy-looking carriage that last photo seems to reveal

The intriguing slope to the NYC photo didn't catch my attention the first two glances

INNOVIA 300 driverless turnkey systems
INNOVIA 300 driverless turnkey systems, entailing Monorail, Advanced Rapid Transit and Automated People Mover solutions, are the perfect answer to mobility needs from within airports, airport links to principal mass transit arteries. Driverless turnkey systems are the emerging game-changing solution to smart mobility, transporting hundreds of thousands of passengers safely, efficiently, comfortably and reliably to their destinations.

Within Bombardier’s turnkey systems the newest game-changing technology is theINNOVIA Monorail 300 system. Cost-effective to introduce and negating the need for major infrastructural or civil works it offers transport capacity ranging from 3,000 passengers per hour per direction (pphpd) up to 50,000 pphpd. Whether transporting visitors to out of town destinations, or offering high capacity, frequent services for more densely used inner-city routes, monorail ensures passengers experience the ultimate in modern ride comfort.

The INNOVIA Monorail 300 system is becoming the choice of many city planners and transit authorities for various reasons:

* Low disruption civil works in the streets and fast construction as structures and rail components can be prefabricated off-site and then assembled along the route.
* The land footprint of the guideway is small and monorails can negotiate tighter curves than other types of transit system, bringing benefits in dense urban areas. A comparable capacity Bus Rapid Transit would occupy at least an 18-meter wide segregated corridor in the streets while the monorail only requires the installation of slim pillars.
* They can even be routed through buildings for the convenience of in-building stops.
* Shorter headways between trains and reduced maintenance with the proven CITYFLO 650 automatic train control system.

Bombardier is currently executing two high profile orders for the INNOVIA Monorail 300 system: a contract to supply a 3.6-km system for the prestigious King Abdullah Financial District in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and a contract to supply a 24-km system for São Paulo, Brazil. The latter will be the largest and highest capacity monorail system in the world, designed to transport 48,000 pphpd, after the predicted fleet expansion. It will reduce end-to-end travel time from current two hours to just 50 minutes – a real quality of life benefit for up to 500,000 riders daily.

For both cities, the INNOVIA Monorail 300 system is a logical choice. It offers the speed – up to 80 km/h – and capacity to make the most out of the investment. The light car shell construction, highly efficient and compact BOMBARDIER MITRAC Permanent Magnet motor, and regenerative braking make it extremely energy-efficient. Not only is it efficient, it’s also attractive to riders. The futuristic, aesthetically-pleasing exterior makes an immediately strong first impression, while the improved suspension delivers excellent ride quality. Low noise levels make it an ideal choice for service to prominent business districts.
Here is a video of Bombardier presenting the Inovia monorail where Sao Paulo's system is mentioned as a new level in terms of heavy demand for monorails.

Full size image of a projection of the monorail (onto a completely unrelated Sao Paulo city south side background, the line will be in the East Side.

It will be a seven-car train and the 24-km line will transport about 500,000 passengers a day.

A text from last year when the contract was awarded:

Bombardier to supply monorail system in Brazil
on Oct 4, 2010

Bombardier Transportation, together with two consortium partners, announced that it has won an order to design, supply and install a 24 km Bombardier Innovia Monorail 300 system in Sao Paulo for Companhia do Metropolitano de Sao Paulo (CMSP / São Paulo Metro).

The total value of the contract is 2.46 billion reals (1.07 billion euro, $1.44 billion US). Bombardier’s share of the design-build contract is 1.40 billion reals (EUR606 million, US$816 million).
The new line, known as Expresso Tiradentes, will serve as an extension of the Sao Paulo Metro Line 2 and will have the capacity to transport 40,000 passengers per hour per direction between the Vila Prudente and Cidade Tiradentes urbanizations.
This journey currently takes almost two hours and the new INNOVIA Monorail system will reduce the journey time to approximately 50 minutes, benefiting 500,000 users daily. Phase One of the system is expected to open for passenger services by 2014.
Commenting on the new product development, Rajeev Jyoti, President and MD of Bombardier Transportation in India, said: "We see a lot of interest from cities in India such as Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai for this type of highly innovative technology as it enables to reach high transport capacity with a system costing approximately half the price and half the time to build than a subway metro, it is ideal for certain corridors feeders of the city's main Metro system, a swift solution to solve mobility problems of fast growing cities.” He added: “We at Bombardier are looking forward to supply this product also here in India, in addition to our advanced and successful Movia metro cars for heavy metro applications."
The Express Monotrilho Leste Consortium (Eastern Express Monorail Consortium) is lead by the Brazilian civil contractor Queiroz Galvao and incorporates construction firm Construtora OAS and Bombardier as an Electrical and Mechanical (E&M) equipment supplier. Bombardier will design and supply system-wide E&M elements for the 24 km, 17 station Innovia Monorail 300 system, including 54 seven-car trains (378 cars) with Bombardier Cityflo 650 automatic train control technology for driverless operation as well as providing project management, systems engineering and integration, testing and commissioning for the new trains and signalling.
Commenting on the announcement, Andre Navarri, President and COO of Bombardier Transportation, said: "To be selected by Sao Paulo Metro as the Monorail system supplier is a great privilege. The introduction of our Innovia Monorail 300 system to this great city will increase mobility for citizens, reduce congestion, and benefit the local economy as well as the environment. In addition, with its attractive aerodynamic design, the Innovia Monorail is set to become an iconic image on the Sao Paulo skyline."
Bombardier brings to Sao Paulo the most extensive transit system experience in the industry and has previously supplied four other fully automated Monorail systems (Tampa, Newark, Jacksonville and Las Vegas in the United States). Bombardier is currently supplying the Innovia Monorail 300 system to Riyadh in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for the prestigious new King Abdullah Financial District.
