^ That's crazy! It looks better now than it did before the war.

I think the current reconstruction of the old town is totally shambolic, and it is such for a number of reasons. It is sad, as historical reconstruction doesn't cost more than the so called "retroversion" and it looks much better. There are examples of a very successful historic reconstruction in Elblag, but in my mind the overall scheme seems chaotic and based on a somewhat wrong planning and esthetic concept.
Historical reconstruction is possible, and should be reinforced especially if the investment is state- backed. This is what should have happened in case of the Old Town Town Hall built according to the retroversion principles, the result of which was a tacky design of glass and brick and steel. Below a fantastic example of historic reconstruction of a state owned building from Poznan- Zamek Krolewski/ Gora Przemysla (Royal Castle. Przemysl Hill in the corner of the Old Town district), originally erected in the Middle Ages, rebuilt in the Renaissance and wiped out in February 1945: ![]() more on: http://main3.amu.edu.pl/~kozk/index....=36&Itemid=34# |

Nope. Castle in Poznań was destroyed mainly in 17th and 18th century, and this, what was rebuild, is rather retroversion, not reconstruction. They didn't know how exactly castle looked like, so they decided to make architectural competition, and they chosen this project.

Why reconstruct it in bricks? Surely the original wasn't, was it?
The same question goes for the Paul Zalewski Shop. |

Why couldn't they just do the right reconstruction ? These post-modern buildings are awful.

Nice renovation. But I'm still dissapointed that they won't do more reconstructions. Doesn't matter if that'll cost more, the results will be more beautiful.

As far as I know, less than 10 faithful reconstructions (plus a lot of pomo developments - link, link2, link3, link4) within historic district are planned for 2013 in Elblag
mike016 might know more.Specjal Pub (Granary Island, Autumn 2013): ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() More: http://www.portel.pl/artykul.php3?i=61623 Last edited by RS_UK-PL; January 5th, 2013 at 09:18 PM. |

like Granary Island. Most of the new construction is not post-modern but rather historicist (or historic-like), pomo is a whole either design language that borrows historical motifs de-ployed over larger scale structures sometimes, hence its overall stylicstic failure. Historicist can be ok as long as vernacular silhouettes, massing, proportions, heights frontages etc are maintained. Elblag looks ok to quite nice. Will see this summer when im in Poland.
wish they would rebuild original building to left of this one:
