The new location for the proposed Warriors arena is brilliant. Let's hope it happens.

Hopefully not. I'd like it for all Bay Area teams to remain where they are... in the Bay Area itself! If any team should go back to LA, it's the Rams. They're LA's traditional team. I can see the Rams moving back to LA, unless the NFL decides to hand them a new (33rd) franchise instead.

We wont see more than 32 teams in the NFL for a pretty long while. And don't count out the Raiders goin' back to L.A. as a possibility.....

Just sayin'.

I won't count that possibility out, since the Bay Area's population is merely 7.5 million people in total, spread across vast amounts of land. People have always argued to me that the Bay Area is not populated enough to handle 2 franchises for every "major" sport. Some of the "fat" has to be cut down according to the people who hold these views, and if the Bay Area had the economic choice between holding onto an SF-based team or Oakland-based team, it'll most likely choose to hold onto the SF franchises. So I do hold the belief that anything's possible and the Bay Area might not only lose the Raiders to LA but also lose the Athletics to Sacramento or another city.

My personal wish is that the Bay Area successfully retains all of its franchises but I realize that this might not always be a realistic possibility.

back on subject: does anyone know how the parking would work. It doesn't look like there is that much room to build a parking complex on the pier by the arena or any where near the arena.

I'm not strongly attached either to Oakland or SF, but some thoughts. This is already a quite heavily trafficked area during rush-hours, during the day and on weekends. There can also be back-up from Giants games. I would expect that the 40 or so basketball games and, say, 100 other events, would create a fair amount of congestion for the area.

Parking is going to be tough, because the arena itself will take up a lot of space in an already crowded area. I would think that transit would become the only reasonably pleasant way of getting there. Fortunately, unlike Mission Bay or ATT, this is close to BART, which has plenty of parking at most stations.

I just read your comment today , and the San Jose sharks won't ever be leaving San Jose CA being that the Sharks fans are rabit fans , and the HP Arena has always been a 100% NHL sellout Venues at a whopping 17,562 per game paid attendances a year. http://espn.go.com/nhl/attendance

It would be a needless risk considering the insane passion of the fans down here. And it's hard to picture the SF demographics supporting hockey, which is basically a working-class blood sport.

Transit works in SJ's favor: Caltrain, VTA, Amtrak, East Bay BART (someday) and HSR (if and when) stop at the door and parking is plentiful and reasonaly priced (compared to Oracle or ATT).

But the key is to keep HP updated and in good condition. It is a beautiful arena from the outside and spacious in most areas, but you have to keep up the amenities and electronics or risk losing business.

not that it means anything, but Silicon Valley Sports & Entertainment (Sharks Owners) DID change their name to Sharks Sports & Ent. Pretty generic name, but does give them some wiggle room. Just saying, but with that being said, it would be asinine of them to leave HP.

Hockey isn't really a working class sport. It is the second most expensive sport by average ticket cost in North America.

True. And I wonder why the NHL's average ticket price is nearly $10 more than the NBA's.

My initial guess is that the NBA still (ever since the lockout several years ago) mandated that all teams have at least 500 tickets available for $10 or less. That means that every day the NBA has at least 15,000 seats that sell for less than half of what NHL teams are selling for the same location.

Average ticket price is more a function of arena size for that sport than class of person attending.

If you figure the SF demographic is good for hockey, you should buy the Sharks, move them to SF and make yourself really, really rich. But you might want to note that the 49ers thought about this for football (the other major violent sport) and moved to the South Bay, specifically citing the lack of a football demographic in SF (evidenced by more season ticket holders living in Sacramento than in SF).

You might also want to look at who walks in and out of Sharks games. Mostly big guys with tattoo's.

Arena size? Most play in the same size arena give or take a few hundred seats. Hell the average attendance for both sports are almost exactly the same as well. Add in the fact that the NHL plays more games than the NBA, I don't buy that argument.

Actually it is mostly women. Seriously, women love hockey. Every Sharks game that I have ever been to was either a date, or a group with at least 50% women. And the crowd noise that I heard was definitely of a higher pitch.

I meant between sports (NBA and NHL, 15-20k; MLB, 30-50k; NFL, 50-70k). But I'm not going to try to parse between the NBA and NHL, which turns on too many other things, including TV coverage.

I will definitely agree that female hockey fans are the most dangerous of all women not currently in prison. And I guess that SF is mostly Asian women and trust fund babies, so your point sounds very reasonable.

Snohetta will design the new Warriors arena! I have high hopes for this one.

Quote:
The Golden State Warriors have selected the fast-rising firm Snøhetta as design architect for the arena that the team seeks to open in 2017 on Piers 30-32, just south of the Bay Bridge. And, according to Snøhetta co-founder Craig Dykers, the two immense projects have more in common than meets the eye.
"There's an interesting set of connections between these two worlds of culture that hasn't been fully explored," Dykers said last week. "They share a similar need to attract people in such a way that they feel comfortable in various settings, from large groups to individuals."
Snøhetta will be paired with the San Francisco office of AECOM, an international firm with broad experience designing sports facilities. The firms were chosen independently and have yet to begin work on the arena project, which also includes 2.3 acres on the inland side of the Embarcadero. Dykers said he hopes an initial design will be ready for release within the next two months or so.

If this new waterfront arena gets constructed, what will become of the old Oakland Arena?
