San Francisco has been talking about an arena for the past four decades. The original Moscone Center envisioned an arena in their development. In the 1980s, there was a proposal to move the warriors to a new arena in the Ricon Hill area. So, people do believe SF was lacking an arena.

So if this arena is built this means bye bye to the Oracle and the Cow Palace?

I'm sure the arena in Oakland (not likely to be Oracle without a major tenant) will find events to fill dates just like the Cow Palace has for years. The premier events will go to this new venue, though.

If they were to say good bye to Cow Palace, where would events like the Tattoo Convention go?

And the Dickens Fair. I was surprised at how big that event is getting. They use almost all of the auxiliary buildings for that.

They don't tear down buildings in California.

Go look up "Kezar Stadium" when you get a chance.

It's a lot smaller now.

There is a story in today's Chronicle comparing the scope of the new Arena to the SF Giants ballpark. As we already know, the Arena development is more than just an Arena but development rights in the area.

It's not just smaller. They totally leveled it in 1989, and built what is there now totally from scratch a couple of years later. The current track and grandstands are even aligned differently than the old stadium was.

As was expected, the San Francisco Travel Association is supporting the Arena with full support. This is not just an Arena for Basketball but for the economic vitality of the region.

Yeah, it's too bad. Oakland has actually nicer weather than SF; but because it's a 40% African-American city and all those liberal fringes priced out of SF, it's pretty much held hostage to those thug parts of the city. Too bad because Oakland has some really nice neighborhoods, too.

I welcome the new Arena for the GSW in San Francisco. SF needs to have a new venue to stage int'l Figure Skating competitions, world-class concerts, a bigger venue to host national political conventions and the new arena would be the perfect gymnastics venue for another future SF Olympic bid.

While your demographics are more or less accurate, I'm not sure they are relevant unless you translate them into economic terms.

The over-riding fact is that SJ has gone from being the middle of nowhere to almost 3 times the size of Oakland and growing both in population and wealth. SF of course has always been larger and richer but they already had a baseball and football team so the A's and Raiders made sense to stay in Oakland. Now (at least arguably) it makes more sense for them to go to the SJ area or LA (even though either of these is far from a foregone conclusion for the Raiders).

The Warriors is a more questionable call, but they have moved back and forth between SF and East Bay over the years. While Oakland is more central to the area, the allure of the bay and bridge views seems to more than offset the extra commute and appears way beyond what Oakland is likely to fund.

An advisory committe has forwarded their recommendation to the Full board of Supervisors to move forward with the Warriors Arena. To appease some of the neighborhood concerns, it will be delayed for one month.

I happened to be at a party with some finance and investment people who live near ATT and they were adamantly opposed to the arena, so there may be some resistance brewing over there. The other big topic was among the Giants season-tickets holders as to whether the City was going to find their "secret" free-parking alleys near ATT.

There are always going to be NIMBYs no matter where you are. Now, is there enough of them to put it on the ballot? That is the question

I would guess not since SoMa is not densely populated. But there is a real "no NY, no LA" mentality among SF residents, which translates to "no building at all" for many.

John King, of the Chronicle, commented on the fast pace the Warriors Arena is going. Like the residents in the area, he believes the parties involved need to step back and take a moment.

I disagree with the article. Look at the 49ers. Once they got the ballot approved, steel went into the ground shortly after. This pier has had three other proposals before and all fell through. Even Larry could not make it pan out even though he spent millions on a EOIR. The locals want a park built. Who is going to come up with the $120 million to rebuild the piers. I say, let the locals in that district pay for it. In the end, the process will continue and IMO, the arena will be built.

There are TONS of parking structures within easy walking distance of this site. The people who commute into SF every day for work made that happen. Most games (not all) would be evening games, except on the weekends, and with all the public transportation available close to the site, I say (IMVHO) parking is a non-issue.

Parking is going to be tough, because the arena itself will take up a lot of space in an already crowded area. I would think that transit would become the only reasonably pleasant way of getting there. Fortunately, unlike Mission Bay or ATT, this is close to BART, which has plenty of parking at most stations.
