A Tour of Southwest England

I just returned from a trip to England, including London and some of the countryside in the southwest. I've taken loads of photos as you can imagine, and I'll be posting them here as they continue uploading.

I brought a travel companion with me along the trip, which some of you may recognize. So let's begin, and enjoy!

First stop was Stonehenge in the County of Wiltshire. The monument is said to date back anywhere from 3000-2000 BC. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, nobody knows for sure what the stones represent. Some believe it was an ancient burial ground, while others think it is a massive sundial. Only some of the original stones remain at the site today.

Less than 15 kilometres south of Stonehenge is the City of Salisbury, with a population of about 40,000 people.

Salisbury is most famous for its cathedral, which was completed in 1258.

The City of Bath has a population of about 85,000 people and is known for its Roman Baths. The City was established in AD 43 by the Romans who built spas and a temple. The City became a World Heritage Site in 1987.

The Isle of Portland lies on the southernmost point of the County of Dorset. The Royal Navy has barracks in this area, where sailing activities will also take place during the 2012 Olympics.

Corfe Castle dates back to the 11th century and was built by William the Conqueror. It was demolished shortly after the castle was assaulted, leaving only ruins today.

Thanks, I've already updated the thread. I have about 400 photos in total, so I won't be posting all of them in here out of respect for people's browsing capacities. But if you want more, check out the flickr link in my signature. My London thread should be up soon.

Thanks for the report! The SW of England (with the exception of Bath) doesn't seem to get that many foreign tourists which is ironic as it is probably the most popular part of the country for UK holidaymakers....

Beautiful photos, it's curious how come of the roofs are starting to turn orange.
Some shots look quite parisian.

That's what I noticed about Bath. It seemed French in style, yet has distinct Roman influences in an English setting.

Bath was very vibrant, busy and beautiful. It was probably the best part.
