I'm not sure it ever has. Around 1999 or 2000 several of the stubby 12-story cluster were underway at once, as well as Carpenters Tower. In 2006 or 2007 the peak included a few of the stubby ones plus Escala. A few others like Cristalla happened during non-peak times. Seven is probably the record.

Yeah, I don't get it why Seattle chooses those muted depressing colors all the time! Like the Metro buses - although I got used to them - what's with the dark yellow? Or the pastel green?
It looks like they choose all the colors that are "not shiny" - to reflect our surroundings?! But we need contrast with our surroundings, actually - all those gray cloudy days can be helped with some colors on the ground. |

From todays DJC.
http://www.djc.com/news/co/12045246.html September 21, 2012 Pauls Corp. to start 139 ArtHouse apartments in Belltown next week By JOURNAL STAFF Denver-based Pauls Corp. on Monday will begin building a 139-unit apartment complex called ArtHouse at 2334 Elliott Ave. in Belltown. Pauls was going to put condos on the property, which is across from the Seattle Art Institute, but changed course when that market turned sour. A small office building there was demolished a few years ago and the site has been vacant since. NK Architects designed the seven-story apartment complex and Compass Construction will build it. Other team members are Tom Rengstorf & Associates, landscape architect; Yu & Trochalakis, structural engineer; KPFF, civil engineer; RDH Building Engineers, envelope; CT Engineering, shoring; and SSA, acoustical. The building is set to open in March of 2014, with studios, open one-bedrooms, one-bedrooms and two-bedrooms. They will range from about 500 square feet to 950. The complex will also have 3,500 square feet of retail space, and a two-level garage with 82 stalls tucked into the back of the sloping property. There will be a 3,000-square-foot lobby and amenity area off the main entry at Elliott Avenue and Battery Street; a deck on the sixth floor; and a fitness room and amenity room off one of two roof decks with views of Elliott Bay and the city. There will be a landscaped courtyard at the second floor, and a dog wash and outdoor dog run. Seattle-based NK said ArtHouse is designed to enhance the streetscape with small retail spaces. Board-form concrete will provide interest and texture at-grade, and 3-Form panels on the decks above will add color while providing privacy.

I like the look, though I'm not thrilled about board-form concrete. Small apartments with retail built out to sidewalks and little parking - all wins.

This isn't even a wedding cake, it's a pound cake.

I think it's ok but it is much better than what is there right now. I still prefer old design over this one.

What will it take to get that horrid green Bell Tower torn down and replaced?

I dunno, I always thought it could be much improved by building a retail structure in the empty courtyard in front. That way it would at least be functionally ugly.

I'd love for them to put retail there. It was discussed a while back, but I'm not recalling whether that was real or just a wish. The trick is foundations, plumbing, and so on would need to be very cheap, as a project of that scale won't draw much in rent. Hell, maybe they could park a trailer on each side.

http://web1.seattle.gov/dpd/luib/Not...=768&NID=14428 I guess this is on the edge of Belltown. Looks like good infill for 3rd Ave, and it looks like no parking too?

The proposal is for a seven-story structure containing 75 residential units over 1000 sq. ft. of commercial space. Existing structures to be demolished. |
