This might be Shop's first contextual design. It fits right in with those malaise era 1970s-1980s dung piles.

SHoP-Designed Rental Towers Rising In First Avenue Mud Pit

Quote:
The 9.2-acre mud pit on First Avenue between 35th and 41st Street will be an eyesore no more. Two luxury rental towers, developed by JDS Development and designed by SHoP Architects, are now rising on the site. The curving, copper-clad buildings will be the stars of the East Side, according to SHoP principal Vishaan Chakrabarti, who told the Times that the 49- and 40-story towers "dance with each other [...] like Shawn and Beyoncé." They will hold 800 apartments and be connected by a "show-stopping" skybridge (look familiar?) that has an indoor pool and lounge. SHoP is also designed the interiors, and the rooftop will feature an infinity pool, fitness center, squash court, and boxing gym. Other amenities include a "demo kitchen" with a dining room, a playroom, and a screening room. Construction began in July, and the buildings should be complete by 2016.

I'm getting kinda bored of crooked towers but the copper cladding should look interesting.

It oxidates into a green patina called verdigris. The Statue of Liberty is the prime example of this. Judging from the renders, they intend to seal it to maintain the original color.

Anyway, this does not float my boat.
This seems to be the majority position so far. To add some balance: I really like them. The copper tone and glass contrast nicely. Together with the subtle angles they are a simple departure from the common blue-glass shoebox towers.

For an idea of what copper can add, look at the Peugeot Onyx concept car.

I hope they seal it REALLY well and REALLY thoroughly because it would be an absolute mess if small gaps started to oxidize. I trust they will be very careful.

Did they deffinitively say the sides would be copper? Cor-ten would give it a rich red color and it wouldnt have the issue of changing to a different color over time.

The more I look at the pictures, my view of the towers has been upgraded to interesting.

If this developer is successful buying Solow's remaining parcels in this development, JDS will look to develop the remaining properties that will be complimentary to this project (616 First Ave) so it will not stick out like a sore thumb and blend in better imo.

The copper façade will definitely make this unique for NYC and hopefully they can make change proof color wise overtime. Anyway, Its just good something will finally rise in this void of an area.

JDS and SHoP are bringing a new public space next to their development at 616 1st Ave: http://www.dnainfo.com/new-york/2013...w_modal_slot_1

Quote:
MURRAY HILL — A new park planned for Murray Hill will be a tranquil green space featuring ginkgo trees, granite paths and a water fountain, according to details revealed by the developer.

JDS Development Group plans to build a privately owned, public park at 626 First Ave., filled with shady seating areas and bike parking, crisscrossed by granite and limestone paths, according to renderings of the project obtained by DNAinfo New York.

JDS Development's park, which is set to be constructed alongside two luxury rental towers that are scheduled to open in early 2016, is slated for the northeast corner of the property, at the FDR Drive and 36th Street.

The developer is set to offer the proposal to Community Board 6 at a public meeting on Sept. 30, and the plan will need to be approved by the Department of City Planning before work can begin, according to Sandro Sherrod, chairman of CB6.
