You have to go on a guided tour, which took about 15 minutes as they are really rushing the groups through. the interior was very pretty though the place is unfinnished and there arnt alot fo rooms to see, but whats there is worth the visit! Unfotunately no pics allowed inside.

Wow, I've been on that bridge when there were so many people, you could not make your way to the other side.

Totally awesome, this thread! If you're planning to visit Germany once again, don't miss the Mosel Valley or the Black Forest

Hmmm, don't like it. It's too clean. It looks plastic. Where's the weathering, the age, the old world rusticness? I think the Germans are going a little overboard with the renovating. A little age, a few rough edges, weather spots, give a castle its character, otherwise it is just another plastic Disney attraction.

Agree. Where's the patina, what sets it apart of some bland Disney castles?

Cut them the money and you'll see!

As a matter of fact the castle itself is not so old as you imagine, it was built in the 15-16 century CMIIW. A little bit of renovation makes it look wholo new
And disney's sleeping beauty castle is modelled after this castle too

@ Cardiff : I really enjoy your thread, great photos

actually, at the site the Neuschwanstein Palace is located today, two small medieval castles stood there for some centuries. But both castles were only ruins, when King Ludwig II of Bavaria decided in 1869 to built exactly there his new, romantic palace...so, in fact itīs not THAT old, and unfortunately unfinished. That's the original plan with the never built castle keep:

well this is probably true for "real" plastic buildings like they now build in dubai or elsewhere.
but neuschwanstein is full of history

The backside of the castle (the one you see from the bridges and anoldblackmarble complains about) was renovated only one or two years ago. They literally work their way around the building for some years now.

I totally understand the point of "AnOldBlackMarble" and I think that especially the Italians are doing a way better job by authentic restaurations than the Germans use to do!

Anyway Neuschwanstein will always be a bit of a Disneyland castle...

Germany has thousands of medieval castles/ruins with nice patina, rough edges, weather spots etc.
Neuschwanstein isn't a real castle, it's a palace.
You can't compare it to medieval castles imo.

Anyway! Great pictures again.

The point is Neuschwanstein is not some kind of medieval castle ruin that should be left alone. Its a modern dream palace of a maniac aristocrat. When it was built there was already electric light and railroads. Its a modern building of the industrial age.

And yes, when it was built it was completely out of its time. Some kind of 19th century kitsch Disney style castle.
