The construction site on your photo isn't a reconstruction, this is a construction site for a new U-Bahn line.

I think cardiff refers to the Kommandantur, the building to the left, which was reconstructed in the late 90s.

Looking forward for the next set of pics

Aparently napoleon stole the chariot as a present for his wife, once defeated, the Prussian took it back and changed the angel from peace to victory and renamed the piazza after Paris, the French embassy is here and the angel almost faces it. Quite apt for the current euro union i think.

Don't know if it's the most famous...but certainly one of the most import in Germany and of great significance globally. It brought forth many Nobel Price laureates.
Some of the most famous students and teachers were:

The Brothers Grimm
both the Humboldt brothers
Friedrich Hegel
Arthur Schopenhauer
Otto von Bismarck
Max Planck
Albert Einstein
Theodor Mommsen
Heinrich Heine
Friedrich Engels
Karl Marx
Daniel Libeskind

The new set of photos is great as usual.

@ Tiaren:

You've forgotten to mention the first female teacher of the Humboldt University:
Lise Meitner

@cardiff: your photos are phantastic, did you take them early in the morning (the shadows/ no tourists on the streets:-))?

We don't have an equivalent to Oxbridge in Germany and due to the federal tradition, there isn't one "most famous"/"best" university in Germany, too. Furthermore, it depends on the science you study, too.
I'd say that in Southern Germany, e.g. Heidelberg is more famous than the Berlin Humboldt university. If it's justified or not is a completely different matter, though - quite a few of the "elite" universities aren't that good - at least for an average student - imo.

Excellent photos. The lighting adds some more magic in the charm of Berlin.

Cant remember seeing much of a university in Heidelburg, must have been away from the touristy older part? Still a pretty place to study though

Going up the Reichstag, was a bit of an odd experiance as you have to book in advance, then que up, then you are walked to the entrance and ushered in like cattle. By this i mean you are walked into the buildings entrance, a door closes behind you, and then the one opens in front with you having to anticipate where to go and the same thing happens again, the door closes behind you and then the one opens in front, quite disconcerting!

The Dome of the Reichstag, there was a very interesting exhibition on the building, and really told the story of Democracy in Germany. From having the building built under the Kaiser, to having parliament abolished and repressed by the Kaiser, and then a brief moment to shine during Germanys hardest times after the war, only to be burnt to the ground by in fighting between the nazis and Comunists and left to ruin while Germany was divided. It really brought home how new a country 'Germany' as we know it is, and also how its constituent parts are just as different as the countries of the UK.
