St Mary and St David, Kilpeck,Herefordshire

If I was asked to recommend one parish church to visit, this would be it. Kilpeck can't compare with the splendour of the great 15thc 'wool' churches of Somerset and Suffolk, nor the medieval merchant's churches of Bristol. It doesn't have the antiquity of the early Anglo-Saxon church buildings such as Escomb, Durham. However, there isn't anything else like Kilpeck in Britain, it is unique, a strangely beautiful and mysterious church, a must see.

The church was built in the 1130's and is widely regarded as one of the best Norman churches in the country. The buildiing has had only minor additions and minimal restoration. This in part due the Old Red Sandstone used in its construction, which is much harder than most other sandstones. The durability of the stone is to be celebrated, the carvings and sculpture on the church remain crisp and the subject matter identifiable, if in some instances enigmatic(there is a notice on the entrance to the church asking visitors if they have any more knowledge pertaining to the possible meaning of some of the carvings could they pass it on) some of the images have puzzled academics for decades.

The doorway of Kilpeck is of particular interest. Here, the sculpture includes, Oriiental warriors, snakes, dragons and other exotic animals. The influences are from as far away as Spain and Italy, with Celtic and Germanic themes and especially Scandanavian. The eaves of the church have a continuous series of corbels(masonry roof supports) all are carved, all secular, subjects include, animals, acrobats, musicians and probably the most famous example of a Sheela-na-gig in Britain. This pagan, female fertility symbol appears most often on churches and like the pagan 'Green Man' which is also present at Kilpeck, illustrate the expediency of the early medieval Christian church, absorbing pagan imagery and ritual and sometimes Christianising them, the Harvest Festival and Easter are two examples.

Kilpeck church is located deep in the south Herefordshire countryside. Truly bucolic, on one side of the church cows graze, on another is a medieval farmhouse, to the west are the wooded, rolling hills of Wales, beautiful.

Carved corbel of the pagan fertility figure, Sheela-na-gig. This is probably the most well known example in Britain.

The chancel, with carved figures of saints on the shafts, unique in England.

St Andrew, Corbridge, Northumberland

Like many medieval churches in this part of the world the some of the fabric consists of Roman masonry, in this case taken from camp of Corstopitum. The church has 7thc foundations, the only remains of which are part of the nave and lower section of the tower, the rest of the tower dates from the early 11thc. The main body of the church is from the 13thc with Victorian additions.

All Saints, Gresford,Nr Wrexham, N.Wales

A beautiful church. Mentioned in the Domesday Book, the present church dates mostly from the early 1400's. The magnificent tower had pinnacles and life size statues added in the 1580's. There are fragments of medieval stained glass in the windows, very fine oak screens and stalls from the early 15thc. The chancel roof ,which is beautifully carved and painted was restored in the 1960's. Most medieval churches have a an ancient yew in the churchyard, Gresford is full of yews! including a couple of very ancient ones.
