Anbar to rebuild four bridges destroyed by al-Qaeda
2012-12-05 By Mohammed al-Qaisi in Anbar ![]() Iraqi security forces walk along a bridge damaged by a suicide truck bomb west of the city of Ramadi in October 2009. [Azhar Shallal/AFP] The Anbar provincial government took the first steps in November to rebuild four vital bridges in Fallujah, Ramadi, Heet and Haditha. Anbar governor Qassim Mohammed al-Fahdawi told Mawtani the four bridges were destroyed by al-Qaeda in attacks between 2006 and 2009, which sought to undermine efforts of the Sahwa forces in the province. At that time, the Sahwa forces had begun fighting al-Qaeda, he added. "Al-Qaeda also destroyed those bridges to cut off military supply lines to the Iraqi armed forces and police members, as well as to impose collective punishment on the residents of villages along the Euphrates River who refused to work or collaborate with terrorist groups during that period," he said. Three Turkish and two Iraqi companies have now begun rebuilding these bridges, including the Japanese Bridge north of Fallujah, destroyed when a truck loaded with explosives blew up in 2006; al-Shameya Bridge, west of Ramadi, which straddles al-Warar River project linking Ramadi to towns in eastern and western Anbar, destroyed in the same year; and two bridges over the Euphrates in Heet and Haditha, destroyed by al-Qaeda in 2007 and 2008. The bridges' reconstruction will cost 12 billion Iraqi dinars ($10.3 million), and the project -- undertaken by Anbar officials in collaboration with the engineering staff at the Ministry of Reconstruction and Housing -- will take two years to complete, according to al-Fahdawi. "Rebuilding these bridges will have a positive impact on the economic and social situation in the western part of Iraq in general," he said. Fouad Kuttab, Anbar's deputy governor for engineering affairs, told Mawtani the four bridges will be rebuilt based on the latest specifications. The widths of each of the four bridges will be increased to about 40 metres, and their lengths [between 100 and 1,000 metres], allowing for two opposite lanes of traffic, he said. The new bridges are also slated to be furnished with lighting and traffic signs, and will be able to withstand the weight of large trucks and vehicles, he said. "The present local government plans aim to address all the destruction caused by the terrorist groups," Kuttab said. "Al-Qaeda only struck only at things it perceived as serving the citizens, especially the poor," he said. "The impact of the destruction is more evident on them than on those considered well-to-do." Al-Qaeda caused hundreds of billions of dollars in losses to the province throughout the years, including losses involving bridges, factories, energy networks and drinking water treatment plants, he said. 'WAR OF A DIFFERENT KIND' Jassem al-Halbousi, chair of the Anbar provincial council, told Mawtani, "We are waging a new war of a different kind; it is a war in defiance of terrorism, as represented in rebuilding what the terrorists destroyed." Eleven such projects include rebuilding the telephone network in Fallujah, completing a project to open new roads in the city, and rebuilding factories, tourist resorts and government services buildings demolished by al-Qaeda, he said. "We hope these projects will be the start for rebuilding all that was destroyed by terrorism by the end of 2014," al-Halbousi said. |

what's with the random style light poles?
the random fence - even though they did not leave any space for pedestrians - all the old bridges had pedestrian crossings... and the usual too-narrow lanes that they are so fond of nowadays... another example, added to the long list, of the unprofessional and corner-cutting work in Iraq...

Maysan tunnel is in Najaf, that explains why the earth is so dry, I thought it was in Maysan province at first.
