These new renderings make it look way better than the former renderings and it's growing on me.

but...

I completely agree with you. The crown is too distinctly different from the rest of the building and that point gets emphasized by the cladding. The horizontal lines on the crown disproportion the building. They create the illusion that each floor is as high as three of the lower floors - which makes it look like it is two separate buildings stuck together instead of an unbroken continuation skyward. It also also visually deemphasizes the great height of this building.

I did a quick and dirty photoshop job from the screenshot Hunser grabbed to show what I mean about integrating the crown (got a bit carried away).

High Floor to ceiling heights and a massive crown plus a spire.

What aspects of the design are references to art deco?

Just to make things clear, this is not an alternative version of the tower.
I did this before the design of One Vanderbilt was even public as sort of a hobby exercise to see what a megatall sized tower would look like in the city - the original flickr links say that.
I think I actually scaled it back a little bit as 2000 feet looked disproportionately tall.

What i really like about this tower is, that even with it´s height, it rather belnds in, then sticking out like toers of this height do in most other cities worldwide. The sheer fabric of Manhattan is really something that i admire, and that towers of this height will be elements of that urban fabric. I think that even a 2000 feet tall tower would rather belnd in, then sticking out.

And here is a glimpse of what the midtown east rezoning could result in.

I love how the tops of the Chrysler and the Empire State are completely cut off here and I kinda love how a tower as gigantic and dominating as 1 Vanderbilt is seemingly buried in a forest of super/megatalls. That will be a sight to see!

However, I hope the Hyatt doesn't get demolished just for the sake of giving the Chrysler Building a bit of breathing space from the other potential developments but if they must redevelop that site, at least build a nicer (and maybe slightly taller) hotel than what's already there. I love the Chrysler and I wanna be at least able to see it from some angles but that might be asking for too much if the rezoning goes through.

It also looks a new tower is in Metlife's place. I may be in a minority here but I kinda want it to stay as it has gradually become an icon in its own right and given how integrated it is with Grand Central, it would probably be a pain in the ass to redevelop plus I think the building's owners are more interested in renovation and a potential recladding as opposed to an entire new development.

I don't think we have to worry about Metlife. Last we saw they were looking into a potential major refurbishment. It's too huge a building to raze down when it can be updated for the 21st Century at a fraction of the cost.

As excited as I am for East Midtown's potential growth, I don't want to see Chrysler completely enveloped by all these new towers. It's my hope that a larger rezoning will include some kind of view corridor preservation, such as the sightline between WTC, ESB and Chrysler, and the view of Chrysler from the East River.

Modernizing East Midtown's office stock to re-establish it as the top global CBD should be the priority, but the value of that Manhattan iconography shouldn't be underestimated.

Walter Gropius worked on that building, there's no way it'll come down. And good thing, too.

Yeah. I see MetLife being true icon of its era. Definitely top 10 most well known skyscrapers of NY.
