This has been repeated since this argument first arose...no one is going to change their minds about it, at this point (even if some degree of critical thinking makes it obvious).

One Vanderbilt mega-office tower picking up steam
One Vanderbilt, SL Green’s brave attempt to make the East 40s office district relevant again, is chugging along — slowly but inexorably.

Black nets shroud what remains of gloomy old brick buildings on the block bounded by Madison and Vanderbilt avenues and East 42nd and 43rd streets.

Demolition has taken down one full corner, and other parts of the site are coming down at about a floor per week.

SL Green has bid out the first chunk of $220 million in transit/pedestrian upgrades it must complete before it can fully occupy the planned 63-story, 1.6 million square-foot tower under terms with the city, according to a source. The skyscraper is scheduled to open in 2021.....

Will open in 2021? Well. Now that's what I call a long wait.

I actually don't consider it a long wait. 2021 is 5 years from now and the tower is not even in prep works yet. It'll take some more time until the older building is demolished and the site is cleared before they start piling works.
After that, a 462m tall, massive skyscraper has to be constructed. Maybe it will look completed in 2020, but interior and finishing works will reschedule the date to 2021.

They have a long way to go with the Demo of the old buildings on site. One thing about NYC demo... no controlled blast to demo a building like you see in other cities...

It comes down the way it went up...piece by piece basically. long drawn out process.

Today (4-7-16)
I wish there was more activity to share, but at least there's a backhoe making some noise.

I have a feeling this will be done by July-August then comes the realm hard part, digging a foundation to support a 1500 ft tower next to and partially over one of the largest urban rail yards/rail terminals and also create passage ways to said terminal and the new 150' deep Annex they are building

What is the % this proposal becomes reality? I hate getting my hopes up.

I have done a little research about this site, and in this case it seems pretty high, but want some confirmation.

I doubt they would be spending money for demolition, otherwise...

Do you remember 432 Park? Never say never. It's rare, but it happens. Even to the most well financed companies.

But I don't think we have anything to worry about at the moment.

ya I feel pretty good about this one it just tricky judging the proposals and knowing what will happen. Some get scrapped like Chicago Spire, some get major adjustments (usually downward) like tower Verre, and some go into eternal purgatory like 15 Penn Plaza.

1 Vanderbilt is definitely a go!

The whole block has to come down first.. 4 buildings and then excavation. TD Bank is the anchor tenant and financing is in place. City desperately wants this area redeveloped and even changed the zoning around the Vanderbilt corridor. City also has given the ok going forward in exchange for $200 million in mass transit improvements from the developer in and around Grand Central

I think those transit improvements are the big reason this is going to take so long. When they finish demolition they have to dig down and build all those complex improvements, tunnels, etc. below ground before they can actually go above ground and build the tower.
