Buildings Reduced to Rubble at One Vanderbilt Site

Quote:
The only sign that a block of brick buildings once existed on the Manhattan property bounded by Madison Avenue, Vanderbilt Avenue, and 42nd and 43rd Streets is a massive pile of rubble. The structures had been wrapped in a black protective netting as top-down demolition was progressing, and with the buildings now gone, a view to Grand Central Terminal has been opened up from the west. It will be a short lived vista for passersby, as a 64-storey supertall readies to rise on this very spot.

I really like this design. It has drawn mixed reviews, but to me it looks like it has both the setbacks and spire that will fit in nicely in the skyline view with the Chrysler, Empire, BOA, and others. The night renders with the lit crown look awesome. BUILD!!!

Most of the new articles and renderings now have this building at ~1400 feet to the spire. A minor height cut isn't a huge deal but it looks kind of squat...

Uggggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I hope not.

This same height cut nonsense happens with every major NYC tower it seems: 30 Hudson Yards, OneWTC, Central Park Tower, Hudson Spire, Verre.

Maybe the resolution the graphic was exported at is just different?

they never explicitly state that. KPF lists the tower at 1501', so the 1400' figure is likely the roof.

1 WTC never got a height reduction... you mean 3 WTC?

Pretty sure that terrible first Libeskind design with that glass atrium on top was 2000 feet to tip.

It was! It was nothing but the atrium, with a wind turbine inside of it.

looks like it's indeed a height cut. There's a very bright silver lining: a new observation deck in the heart of midtown in 2020. Just imagine the view. Plus, this is still a solid supertall in NYC's 400m+ club.

Hines is partnering with SL Green Realty Corp. to serve as development manager One Vanderbilt, a 58-story, 1.5 million-square-foot commercial office tower in Midtown Manhattan between Madison and Vanderbilt Avenues and 42nd and 43rd Streets.

Designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF), the project features a crown that will be visible from across the five boroughs and beyond with a spire that will extend the official height to 1,401 feet above street level. The development will include 1,408,000 square feet of new Class A office space and 32,000 square feet of new retail space. The building will be topped with a 60,000-square-foot observation deck that will occupy floors 57 and 58.

Excavation and foundations work is expected to take place from March 2016 through 2017. Vertical building construction will start in May 2017; the building is scheduled to be complete in August 2020.

It's still a solid supertall. It's not, however, in the upper leagues anymore. At 1,514' this was up there in stature with 111 West 57 and Central Park Tower. For me, it's now one tier behind them. The design was already a bit subpar. What gave it stature was its amazing height. And that's now gone too.

Without the spire, this thing is 1,300'. 1,300' in NYC isn't amazing frankly. Hell, this will look only 50' taller than the Empire State Building considering the spire is small.
