NEW YORK - A groundbreaking ceremony is being held Tuesday for what will be the city's second tallest building.

One Vanderbilt Avenue will top out at more than 1,500 feet, putting it behind One World Trade which is more than 1,700 feet tall.

The tower will stand just across the street from Grand Central Terminal and feature 1.6 million square feet of office space.

Construction is expected to be finished by 2021.
I think we should stick to the 1501' figure unless we're told otherwise by the developer or the architect.

A promo video was posted on Yimby Forums entitled, "One Vanderbilt Welcomes IBM," sounds like this building could've landed tenant number two.

The model used in the new promo video definitly shows a tower way above 1401 feet. So happy.

The massive development will also bring $220 million in transit improvements to the area, and under the agreement the city reached with the developers, SL Green will be required to complete the transit improvements first before renting out the more highly prized upper floors of the supertall.

So what are the transit improvements exactly? SL Green will refurbish the subway mezzanine level at GCT that will provide more direct connections between that level and the street level. Most of the transit funds will be used to make improvements on the 4/5/6 lines. There will be new exits on both ends of the platform.

There will be direct connection from One Vanderbilt to the subway, Metro North and the future LIRR. In addition, the developers are building a 4,000-square foot public transit hall on the ground floor of One Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt Avenue between 42nd and 43rd Streets will be converted into a 14,000-square-foot pedestrian only plaza. All of these improvements will in turn ease congestion, city officials say, and will allow for one additional train per hour on each side on the 4/5/6 and create space for 1,100 more passengers in each direction as well.

The "transit hall"

Vanderbilt Pedestrian Plaza

To be quite honest, I'm not that impressed with the base (though I really like the rest of the tower). For all the developer's talk about it engaging with and accentuating GCT's classical architecture, it's still fairly banal. That said I'm looking forward to all the transit and public space improvements.

Otie over at the Yimby Forums is working on a detailed architectural model (I believe via some connection to the developer/architects) and he described the tower depicted in those promo videos as "out of scale."

This model was also brought out at the groundbreaking ceremony, per Yimby, and it seems to show a shorter tower than the video:

Between Otie's usually infallible information, the wave of altered figures, and the insistence of the SL Green reps, I'm inclined to believe the 1,301 (1,401 to the tip of the spire) figure.

There are lots of hi-res images available on the building website. Here's one:

Bummed they chopped the height ---

I was looking forward to a 1500 ft tower and found out it will only be 1300 roof height with a spire that takes it to 1400? Oh well. This will be fun to watch rise in such an incredibly busy and bustling area of Manhattan.

I sort of agree, here's what I posted somewhere else:

One thing I really miss are all the gold accents from the older renderings. they really gave the building a much more warm and classic look, less sterile. Don't get me wrong still a beauty, but I hope they either bring them back, or that the newer renderings are simply inaccurate (which I doubt).

But also if you look closely at their recent promo video, some of the gold accents are still there.

Dude. Do you have some difficulty with the concept of conflicting sources? If you check out the One Vanderbilt Instagram Feed there is no mention anywhere of 1,501 ft., only 1,401 -- and that's without bringing up NYYimby's reporting, in which SL Green insists the floor count has been cut from 67 to 58.

Picking and choosing only the sources that confirm your desires is frankly pretty juvenile. And lambasting other forum members by repeating your assumptions with your fingers in your ears is as intellectually dishonest as it is rude.

He's been doing the same in the Central Park Tower thread. Really annoying.

Must learn to never get your hopes up, nyc15.
